Bear Essentials

October 20, 2021, Issue #11

Principal's Message

Dear Brown School family,

Amanda, Anitra, and our library aides have been hard at work reimagining our library after the renovation this summer. Check out the photos! The flow has been changed to make the space more inviting, and it encourages our students to browse and discover. It's vibrant and dynamic. Doug has been hard at work updating the paint to more modern colors that are going to have consistent "pops of color" with other shared spaces in our school. We are also working on adding more flexible seating to encourage collaboration.

Love,

Dr. Angela

This Week's Essentials

Required COVID Testing for All Students in Extracurricular Activities & Sports

If your Brown School student (elementary, middle, and high school) is doing any extracurricular activities or sports, they are now required to take a weekly COVID-19 test. Students can take a test at any of our JCPS schools. This includes ALL clubs, academic competitions, sports, practices, interest meetings, etc.

The Test to Play program is scheduled to start on Monday, November 1. We do our weekly COVID testing on Thursdays, you will need to sign the consent form by Wednesday, October 27th in order for your student to participate in testing on October 28th. (Testing on October 28th will allow your student to participate in upcoming activities the next week.)

COVID-19 Testing Consent Form: Your student must have a consent form on file to get tested at school. You'll find that form under the required forms list in Parent Place. Please make sure to complete the form if you haven't already.

Click HERE to complete a student consent form.

Halloween Dress Up Day

With Halloween fast approaching, many students will want to wear costumes on October 29th to school. Please keep in mind our Student Dress Policy to ensure that the costume meets the guidelines for regular school attire. Please avoid toy weapons, masks, excessive fake blood, gore, and full face paint. Avoid any costumes that may attempt to represent a group or population of people/culture, marginalize a group or culture, or focus on stereotypes. Also, avoid costumes that are really scary, because we do have very young students in our building. If you have any questions about the appropriateness of a costume, please ask an administrator or counselor!

Amanda Klakamp, Librarian

Book Fair

Buckle your safety belts! The Book Fair is returning THIS YEAR and we are so excited!!! We will be running things a bit different this year, to keep crowds to a minimum, but will give everyone plenty of chances to come up and see us. Mark your calendars for November 29th to December 8th. We are asking for LOTS of parent volunteers (From setup to run it during the day, to tearing it down). Please contact Amanda amanda.klakamp@jefferson.kyschools.us for additional information or to inquire about assisting us with our Brown School Book Fair.

Curtis Moss, Band & Choir Teacher

Band Concert in Peace Park

Our High School students begged Mr. Curtis to have the "annual" October Concert since 2020 canceled so many things. The Band has been working hard on Pep Band-type popular tunes you will recognize. The choir helped choose a piece to perform and will bring some spooktacular music to the concert!

Brown Family, THIS IS AN INVITATION TO COME SEE THE CONCERT!!!

Who: All High School Band and Choir Students are performing. Anyone is welcome to come to the concert!

What: October Concert

Where: Peace Park, directly across the street from the main entrance of Brown School. (You should bring a blanket or lawn chair) The gym is the alternative in case of bad weather.

When: Friday, October 22nd. The concert begins at 6:00 PM.

Adults, remember to bring something to sit in or on at the park (folding chairs, blankets, etc...). Younger children may want to enjoy playing on the playground equipment while the concert happens. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Students ARE allowed and ENCOURAGED to dress up and wear costumes that meet the school guidelines for the concert.

  • Review of Equity and Diversity Policy

Pick up Safety Reminder

  • Please avoid stopping vehicles in the driving lanes on First Street. DO NOT DOUBLE PARK YOUR VEHICLE. This blocks traffic and creates a dangerous situation for students attempting to access these vehicles. Please only stop in spaces at the curb. Please note that middle and high school families may utilize the length of First Street to pick up students. There are numerous building exits along First Street that will allow students to safely enter vehicles parked along the curb.

  • Please avoid parking and/or driving through neighboring businesses. Picking up students in these areas presents a danger because our staff members are unable to supervise those areas. Vehicles that park without permission in areas that belong to neighboring businesses may be towed or subject to parking fees/fines. Additionally, parking vehicles that obstruct entrances, exits, and drives of businesses are subject to towing and/or fines.
