J. Graham Brown School

Bear Essentials

August 13, 2021, Issue #3

Principal's Message

Dear Brown School family,

We have had another great start to the school year! The amazing phase 1 our of our renovation for the most part is complete, and it has enabled us to group our students more effectively for collaboration among our teachers. Our "cubs" in our new Cubs Corner (K-2) are enjoying learning in their bright, cheerful learning space. We will be working with our Mural Painting class to make this area even more special for our cubs. Our junior bears (3-5) are located in the heart of our school on the second floor. Almost all middle school core content classes are now on the second floor and high school classrooms are on the third floor.

Our students always have a ton of questions (and opinions) about lunch! To start the year due to ongoing renovation work in our kitchen, students are being served "grab and go" lunches. Later next week we will be able to switch over to hot meals for both breakfast and lunch. Additionally, high school students were allowed to eat in the courtyard this week and middle school students will be allowed to eat outside next week. This will keep our numbers more manageable and help us encourage social distancing among students.

In the mornings, if you are using our back alley drop-off line, when you enter the alley please ask your student to get ready to disembark the car. This will speed up our drop-off process tremendously. Ask your student to have their mask on, and have their items (backpack, lunch box, water bottle) in hand. Additionally, if you see me or a staff member unloading a car behind you, that is your cue to ask your student to get out of the car. We need everyone to unload in one group so that we are not stopping the line again for one family to disembark their vehicle at the door while others behind them have already gotten out.

I'd also like to remind everyone not to park in the parking lots behind our school or use those parking lots for drop-off or pick-up of your student. Please use only the alley behind the school or S. First Street. We want to be respectful to our neighboring businesses.

I joined our PTSA earlier this week. Won't you? Our PTSA does so much for our school and we would love to have your partnership! Click HERE to join!

Love,

Dr. Angela

This Week's Essentials

Student Dress Policy

Policy Statement:

We value the diversity of the students who attend the J. Graham Brown School and recognize its mission statement, our shared values, and the students’ ability to self-direct and self-discipline. We recognize also that choice of clothing often represents a form of political, religious, cultural, and gender-identity expression, and that protection of that right of self-expression is an important component of the educational and social environment at the Brown School.

Dress Expectations:

  • Students should wear clean, comfortable, school-appropriate attire. We specifically request that students consider the K-12 community when making clothing choices.

  • Undergarments should be worn and must be completely and deliberately covered.

  • Shorts/skirts must completely cover the outline of the buttocks while sitting, standing, or walking up the stairs.

  • Tops with hoods may be worn, but the hoods must be down while on school property. Attire should allow visibility of the sides of one’s face except as part of religious or cultural headwear. The requirement or option to wear a mask for medical or general public health is up to the discretion of the administration, in accordance with district, local, and state policies.

  • Clothing must completely cover the belly button.

  • Tops must have straps.

  • All students must wear shoes throughout the school day. Students in grades K-2 must wear closed-toe rubber-soled shoes. Teachers have the discretion to require students to wear closed-toe shoes for specific classes for safety reasons.

  • All clothing must be free of reference to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, violence, or any other image or message that the administration deems to be offensive or disrespectful. Other attire that causes distraction to the school environment is subject to appropriate action after reasonable notice in accordance with JCPS Policy.

  • Students in grades 6-12 are required to display on their person their school-issued student ID throughout the school day. Students without their school-issued student ID will be sent to the office for a replacement ID, and a $5 replacement fee will be added to the student’s account.

Staff are expected to communicate dress expectations to students and direct students to staff and/or resources to correct attire issues. Administrators may use their discretion in implementing and enforcing these dress expectations. Any student who feels that another student or staff member is dressed inappropriately may make an anonymous complaint to any administrator.

Sign Up for SBDM Committees

We want your partnership and collaboration! Please sign up for one of our SBDM committees! Some committees may be holding their meetings virtually, and chairpersons will work with the committee members to determine meeting dates/times. Parents, teachers, staff, students, and community members may participate on committees. Signups will end at 4:00 on Wednesday, August 25th. Click HERE to sign up!

If you were on a committee last year, you must sign up again to participate on the committee this year. Due to our bylaws, we are not able to add anyone to a committee after the signup window closes.

Budget Committee – has the responsibility of overseeing the general fund budget. A yearly budget is presented to the council as well as recommend budget adjustments if needs or available funds change during the year. This committee must adhere to state and district guidelines.

Curriculum and Instruction Committee – will review, gather, discuss, examine, and determine what practices (involving curriculum, instruction, assessment, and instructional tools) are best for students at the J. Graham Brown School. Input regarding the development of a school schedule and integration of technology to meet instructional priorities may be addressed in this committee.

Professional Development Committee– creates a plan for professional development that supports school needs. This committee studies requests for professional development, looks at problem areas as reflected by the planning committee, reviews the CSIP and then recommends a plan to council, which shall include professional development for the school council, in accordance with district and state timelines.

Racial Equity Committee - is responsible for supporting the school in eliminating racial bias and achievement/opportunity gaps. This committee will analyze SBDM policies and school practices to determine the impact on demographic groups, disaggregate Comprehensive School Survey and achievement data, contribute to the school’s equity monitoring processes, and recommend next steps.

Safety and School Climate Committee – is responsible for investigation of safety concerns for the school including evacuation plans, facilities, and school community issues. The safety committee is also responsible for before/after school and school-sponsored activities.

Counselors

*It's almost time for back to school!*

Tip of the week: Back to school is such an exciting time of new beginnings and even more so this year! Sometimes that can also cause stress and anxiety. To reduce stress, start preparing your back-to-school items, take this time to dispose of supplies that are used up, and replenish items that you will need. In other words, be prepared! Also consider taking a moment to save important emails in your (or your student’s) account and purge things that are no longer relevant. Starting the year with a clean slate can be so refreshing and set everyone up for success!

We are so excited to share our new Counseling/Student Services Suite with everyone. This area is still under construction, but Robin and Christy will be out and about and the main office will be able to reach us if needs arise!

Elementary School Students

Miss Christy can't wait to see all of her students once again! I know that kids are also super-excited to see all of their friends at school. Hot off the presses, all students, teacher, staff, and parents/guardians are required to wear masks in public areas, when entering a JCPS building, in common areas unless actively eating or drinking, and/or in a JCPS vehicle occupied by more than one person. Also, make sure you read this newsletter and other communications from Dr. Angela and other Brown staff as we approach the opening day of school.

Middle and High School Students

*Google Classroom is back! Robin will use "Class of 20##" to communicate with students in grades 6-12. If your student hasn't already joined, encourage them to do so! Codes will be shared with students in study hall or English classes the first week back. These google classrooms roll over each year and information that is relevant both school-wide and class specific (i.e. the form to request a class change for everyone or scholarships for seniors) will be posted there! You don’t want to miss out!

*Remind.com will be used for short, time-sensitive updates. Codes for Remind class groups will also be shared the first week of school.

*Schedule change requests can be made for academic purposes on THIS form. Schedule changes may not happen until after 8/9/21 and can happen as late as the 10th day of school although every effort will be made to adjust them ASAP. Please do not fill out the form more than once, you can include multiple class changes in the form.

Athletics

Fall Sports:

Fall sports for middle and high school are off and running (pun intended). The heat has canceled a few soccer matches and golf matches, but we should be good to go for next week.

Girls soccer actually got to play on Tuesday and started their season off with a 12-1 win over Seneca. Goals were scored by Natalie Sato (4), Peyton Goodman (4), Owen Goodman (2), Natalie White (1) and Maura Austin (1). The whole team played great. They will play at Presentation Monday and at PRP Thursday.

Boys soccer had games canceled last week, but are excited to get going this week. They have Southern on Monday, Atherton on Tuesday and on Thursday, we will play a home game at LouCity soccer fields. The boys are coming off a 4-4-1 season, and are looking to have a winning season this year.

High School volleyball will kick their season Tuesday at home against St. Francis. They will then take on the LKY Saints on Thursday, before the JCPS tournament at Seneca over the weekend. Go Lady Bears!!

Cross Country has been practicing hard (when the heat index is in our favor) and they are excited to run against some other schools in September.

Golf has the week off before the JCPS Championships on Monday August 23rd.
