Principal's Message
Dear Brown School family,
I have heard from many parents this week that the shift to NTI reminded them how amazing our teachers are at Brown School! I hope you are also letting the teachers know! Be sure to check out the wonderful article and gorgeous photos of our beloved kindergarten teacher Carrie Mook in the Courier-Journal. Just click the photo to go to the link to the article.
After over a year and a half of work from many, many stakeholders, our SBDM Council voted to implement a new bell schedule for the 2022-23 school year. The “4/5 Mesh Schedule” was approved with an 11-1 vote. This schedule will keep us on our current 90-minute block schedule for Monday through Thursday (with some slightly shorter classes/holding times for six related arts teachers for some of their classes). Fridays will consist of 5-blocks, with a dedicated time for Advisory for our middle/high school students that can also be used for class meetings. This schedule also provides additional planning time for elementary teachers, which we know is needed instructionally for them to plan prescriptively to properly implement the Jan Richardson Guided Reading program, math workshop, and the Jennifer Serravallo Writing program. While we do not anticipate that this schedule is going to provide structures to implement everything that is needed, it will be a manageable step in the right direction. I applaud the decision. We are not changing for change’s sake, but in an effort to create structures that facilitate a better learning environment for our students!
Our council also tasked our Curriculum and Instruction Committee to provide updates every six weeks on how the 4/5 Mesh is working, and to further research a schedule for the 2023-24 school year that will accomplish the following goals:
1. Equal planning time for ALL teachers. (In order for teachers to be able to plan prescriptively)
2. Time for advisory sessions for middle and high school students.
3. Time for teachers to be able to observe other teachers in their PLCs for learning walks and feedback/sharing of ideas.
4. Embedded/guaranteed acceleration time for all K-12 students. (Including time for G/T instruction)
I greatly appreciate everyone who has had a hand and a voice in this process. Your voice has been instrumental in determining this outcome. This process has not been easy for anyone, but it’s time now to all work together as a team and a family. Collaborating with and supporting each other makes us stronger.
Love,
Dr. Angela
This Week's Essentials
Spare Legos Needed
Our Middle and High School Robotics Class is building a wheelchair ramp out of Legos to donate to a student who is doing home hospital school. We think this is a great display of Empathy! The bulk of the legos have been donated and our wonderful teacher, Mr. Gregory Grazette, has purchased a few too. We are very close to finishing this project and are about to run out of legos. If you have any legos that you are willing to donate we would appreciate it. Please contact the teacher HERE with any additional questions or concerns. You, or your student, can drop the donations off to the main office and we will get them to the class.
COVID Vaccination Record
We can now enter your student's COVID 19 Vaccinations into Infinite Campus - Health - Immunizations. If you would like a record of your student's COVID Vaccinations to be kept by the school along with their regular mandatory vaccination records, please send a copy of the card to the Records Clerk HERE. We must be able to see the student's name and the dates of both vaccinations. You can scan the card or take a photo of the card and email it to the Records Clerk, she will input the information promptly and place a hard copy into the student's permanent file, along with the other required health documents. (This is an optional feature and not mandatory at this time.)
COVID Quarantine Procedures
Please note that JCPS continues to follow our previous guidelines on students for quarantine due to COVID. Although the CDC shared new guidance, we are awaiting protocols from the Kentucky Department of Public Health to determine how the state might require schools to implement any new rules. Until we receive this from the state, we will continue to follow the existing guidance of a ten day quarantine for those who test positive. Please review the current guidelines below.
For students who test positive, they will quarantine for 10 calendar days starting from the day after either the positive test or the onset of symptoms, whichever comes first.
For students who are identified as close contacts of individuals who have tested positive, they will quarantine for 10 calendar days starting the day after exposure. These students will have the opportunity to participate in the Test to Stay program, which would enable them to return to school with a negative COVID test from the previous school day.
If and when procedures are updated, the district and our school will communicate accordingly.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
Monday, January 17th is the day we recognize Dr. King's birthday! Many families use this day in service to the community and fellow man. Consider using this day to collect books to donate to a Little Library, clean up a park, do yard work for elderly neighbors, or sign up with a community organization to serve to support racial equity. You could also use this day to learn more about Dr. King and other civil rights leaders. ffffffffff
