Principal's Message

Dear Brown School family,

Our amazing traffic guard, Cathy Kathey is featured in this month's Today's Woman! Click the image to be taken to the article in the online magazine and read all about her. She definitely has the coolest head and biggest heart in our Brown School Family.

Also, check out some images from our ongoing renovation.

  • The trim work is all completed on the new acoustical panels in the auditorium. (photos 1 and 2)

  • Old doors were torn out from entrance #2 and a new set is going in. This will allow the addition of a wheelchair ramp, and will also create a secure entrance to our school. In August 2022, this entrance will become the main entrance into Brown. A classroom door was closed up that was located in between these secure doors. (photos 3 and 4)

  • Two of our largest classrooms in the building were split to add mechanical rooms to house the new HVAC system. The windows will be removed from the mechanical rooms and will be replaced with vents. (photo 5)

  • Ceilings were removed from the main office and also from the main lobby. (photo 6)

  • Continued work was done to install a new elevator in the northwest area of our building so that we have elevator access to basement classrooms, weight room, and locker rooms. (photo 7)

Thank you to our PTSA who provided our teachers and staff breakfast on Monday. We appreciate all the support our PTSA provides our school.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of Covid, please go get tested. JCPS has sites open after school almost every day and testing is free to JCPS families. You can sign up to be tested HERE.

Love,

Dr. Angela

This Week's Essentials

Family Map Reports

Middle and High School Family MAP reports will be sent home at the end of this week.

Elementary Family MAP reports will be sent home Monday with student report cards.

Tentative NTI Readiness

With recent discussions on the potential of schools moving to NTI at some point in the near future, we want you to know what to expect in the event that it happens. Please review the points below:

  • Students will follow a schedule that includes live instruction from teachers.

  • Teachers will use Google Classroom to communicate with students aside from live instruction, which under most circumstances, will be provided using Google Meet.

  • Teachers will be accessible to students for questions.

  • Students will have a device provided by the school to access Google Classroom and Google Meet.

  • School staff members will communicate with families throughout NTI using our established methods.

Please note a decision has NOT been made to move to NTI. As a school, we are taking a proactive approach in our preparation in the event that we do.

Student Newspaper!

Please read the Bear Necessities, a student publication that gives students the opportunities to share their voices on current events.

Parent Scheduling Survey

The Five Goals Task Force has come up with two new options in an attempt to equalize planning time throughout the school, increase elementary related arts time, and provide advisory time for middle and high school students. Please complete this survey so we may present feedback to SBDM on the available options.

Please complete the SCHEDULING SURVEY by 11:00 PM on Friday, January 7th.

COVID Quarantine Procedures

Please note that JCPS continues to follow our previous guidelines on students for quarantine due to COVID. Although the CDC shared new guidance, we are awaiting protocols from the Kentucky Department of Public Health to determine how the state might require schools to implement any new rules. Until we receive this from the state, we will continue to follow the existing guidance of a ten day quarantine for those who test positive. Please review the current guidelines below.

  • For students who test positive, they will quarantine for 10 calendar days starting from the day after either the positive test or the onset of symptoms, whichever comes first.

  • For students who are identified as close contacts of individuals who have tested positive, they will quarantine for 10 calendar days starting the day after exposure. These students will have the opportunity to participate in the Test to Stay program, which would enable them to return to school with a negative COVID test from the previous school day.

If and when procedures are updated, the district and our school will communicate accordingly.

Inclement Weather Procedures

With the potential for inclement weather over the next few months, we want you to be familiar with inclement weather procedures. Please access information on those procedures through this link. Also, please make sure you are registered for district communications. This will enable you to receive notification of any changes to the schedule for inclement weather.

If you would like a record of your student's COVID Vaccinations to be kept by the school along with their regular mandatory vaccination records, please send a copy of the card to the Records Clerk HERE. We must be able to see the student's name and the dates of both vaccinations. You can scan the card or take a photo of the card and email it to the Records Clerk, she will input the information promptly and place a hard copy into the student's permanent file, along with the other required health documents. Athletics

Winter Sports:

Swim/Dive Team

High School swimming hosted a great meet at UL on Saturday. There was a nice crowd to cheer on the swimmers, and everyone had a great time. Nice job swimmers and coaches William and Samantha.

Bowling Team

Our bowling team continues to improve, while taking on a very tough schedule. They will be in action on Thursday the 13th against Ballard.

Archery

Archery will keep working hard in practice (especially at 15 meters) for the next shoot at Sacred Heart on 1/30.

Basketball

Middle school basketball will host Western on Thursday 1/13. Both teams have gotten a lot better and play hard the entire game. We are getting to where we need to be.

High School basketball has a little time off for rest and practices. Our girls will take on Western on Friday at 4:30, and both girls and boys will play Male on Sunday at 1:30 and 3:00. Go Bears!!

All student-athletes must complete weekly Covid testing and have all eligibility paperwork turned in before they can participate. Those forms can be found on the athletic page of mybrownschool.org, under eligibility documents, or in our main office.

Elementary Basketball/Cheer

The elementary basketball team will have a few more practices before their first game on 1/22 at Brown. They will play Norton Commons at noon.

We are very sorry to say, but since we had very limited response for cheer and no coaching volunteers, we will take this year off in hopes to have a team next season. Hopefully those students that wanted to cheer will come to the games and cheer our team on!!
