The Elementary Art Room is open! This is my first time in my four years here at the Open School that I’ve had my own art room. It’s a fantastic space and is adjacent to the Music Room. I’m so excited to start art for this year!
We spent the week before Thanksgiving Break starting to get acquainted with Art Room norms and routines, and working on short projects that students could take home. Pre-school and Kindergarten both did simple drawings on drawing paper with large black crayons, which I’ll keep as a baseline for looking at their artistic development throughout the year. Pre-school also decorated name tags with watercolor paper, which I’ll use to assign seats in the Art Room and Music Room in the future. Kindergarten also began exploring some of the materials we’ll use at TAB centers: Play-Doh, Dry Erase markers with White Boards, and Twisteez-Wire.
In ELC, IA and Bridges, students received sketchbooks and began decorating the front covers with colored pencils. On the first day of class, IA students made friendship bracelets and Bridges students participated in a group “Paper Sculpture Challenge.”
