Evergreen High School does not endorse any specific gap year or study abroad program. It is the responsibility of the student and their parent/guardian to review the program and its offerings.
Middlebury College and UNC-Chapel Hill have been studying the costs/benefits of gap years and the evidence shows a gap year can be a great option for a young adult! The rule of thumb is that it should be a year ON, not a year OFF, so kids should develop an interesting plan that may include work, travel, study, service, earning a certificate, etc. We also recommend students apply to college during their senior year and then ask for a deferment...it makes it easier to accomplish the application process after high school. We have gap year brochures and flyers in the Futures Center; here are some more resources about gap years:
One of the oldest programs in the country, ARCC has offered extraordinary summer programs for teens. By traveling to locations rarely visited by outsiders, we are able to provide unique, immersive, and educational experiences for our students. ARCC Gap Year programs offer an educational and cultural bridge between high school and college. They are an opportunity to live, work, learn and explore in some of the greatest classrooms on earth. ARCC is looked to as the standard for delivering quality, fulfilling and enriching programs for our participants. What we have learned over the decades is that successfully operating these types of programs, year after year, is not an accident. Superbly planned programs are a hallmark of ARCC Programs. Almost every minute of every ARCC program is planned in detail. Some ARCC programs are planned years in advance of their departures — a monumental challenge — but one that pays off immensely for our students. ARCC is committed to providing unique and life-changing experiences that resonate deep within our students. On our programs, our students venture far off the beaten path, go to places and do things that most people can only dream about. We’ve spent forty years building close relationships with organizations and communities around the world to ensure our students engage in truly intimate, authentic encounters with the people, the cultures and the lands they visit.
The Island School offers educational experiences in Eleuthera, The Bahamas. During semester and summer terms, high school sophomores and juniors from around the world joint our community to learn outside the walls of a classroom. You can earn high school credit. There are also college-age student programs.
Gap Year Programs "For seven decades Putney has provided exciting and innovative programming for high school and middle school students in the U.S. and abroad.
