If you are setting up your Indiana Career Explorer account up for the first time, please follow these instructions.
Ensure "I need to create an account" is checked.
Click on "I am a student."
STEP 1:
Most likely, you'll be selecting "Freshman" since you should be in your first semester. If you do not know your expected graduation year, you can select two years from now.
There are several Ivy Tech campuses listed; make sure you select the Central Indiana Region. As you start typing "Ivy Tech" these campuses will auto-populate.
STEP 2:
Please use your Ivy Tech email address. All fields are required for this step. You may choose to receive communication via email, text, both, or neither.
STEP 3:
All fields are required on this step.
Please note, this system does not interface with Ivy Tech's Single Sign On (SSO). Your desired username can be the same as your Ivy Tech username, but it is not required.
STEP 4:
You are required to fill out this step. If you prefer not to answer either or both questions, simply click "I prefer not to answer." You must click "I have read and agree to the terms and conditions of use" to complete your account creation.
Click on any of these assessments to begin. You can take them in any order and retake as often as you'd like!
You will go through a series of items that you can rate your like or dislike for. Above is an example of the Interests Assessment. Each assessment takes around 10 minutes to complete.
Upon completion, the system will provide you with your top 5 pathways based on that particular assessment. We have starred two of the pathways related to IT above.
For a "bigger picture view," View by National Career Cluster Ranking. The answer to your question is more obvious: Information Technology meets your interests as a career choice the most!
The second tab on your results page, "Occupations to Explore," will list relevant careers you might find interesting based on your assessment results. You can also filter this list by education type, demand, and individual pathways.
Clicking through the occupation's detailed page will give you an idea of what it's like to work in that career. Just expand each section to find out more! Software developers (for apps) are in high demand now, with a great potential for job growth in the future.
A review of your dashboard once all assessments are taken is a snapshot of what some of your best career opportunities might be. Researching these industries and occupations is the first step in creating your career plan!
Your career coach will be able to understand your motivations, skills, and interests better, which will make for more productive coaching sessions.
The IT industry is huge and touches every part of business. Pinpointing your focus early will help you plan your academic career for on-time graduation (and getting into the workforce quicker!).
Having a clear idea of what you want to do will allow you to start networking with pros now, paving the way for connections down the road for internships or jobs.
Knowing what you want to do can also help you tailor additional professional development. Podcasts, seminars, and conferences are plentiful in every area of IT!
