What a busy half term we have had! From residentials, to cinema trips, to parent learning sessions and lots and lots of Science investigations - you name it, we've done it! Well done to all of you for surviving your second term in Year 5 - you are smashing it!
We hope you all have a very well-deserved rest over the Easter break and enjoy some quality time with family and friends.
Emmeline Pankhurst class, don't forget to learn your lines for our assembly. I have posted the lyrics and music to our songs on Google Classroom for you to listen to.
As you know, our Geography topic this term has been about why our oceans are so important. We have learned that the oceans are a crucial part of our planet that we depend on and that our oceans are under threat due to global warming, climate change and plastic pollution.
During one of the weeks of your break, we would like you to keep a record of your family's single-use plastic use by filling in the WWF plastic diary (see picture). You have been given a paper copy by your teacher and there is also a copy posted on Google Classroom.
Each day, we spend 20 minutes practising our arithmetic skills (using mental and written methods to answer addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions). As with times tables, the key to improving your arithmetic skills is practise, practise and more practise!
We recommend that the children regularly spend 20 minutes practising their arithmetic skills. The links below generate random questions that they can answer and mark online. It is important that they use written methods for more challenging calculations so they should have a pencil and paper handy.
Below are the links to three levels of arithmetic questions, mild (easier), medium and spicy (challenging). At this point in the year, we aim for the children to be able to answer the majority of the medium questions.

Medium: https://mathsbot.com/primary/year4Mini
Spicy: https://mathsbot.com/primary/year5Mini
Although we don't have any spellings to learn over the break, if you would like to, you can log into Spelling Shed and go back over some of the words and spelling patterns we have already learned.
Lots of the children have been assigned their fruit bookmark home readers to read in their spare time. These have been put onto Boom Reader so that you can keep track of what they have been assigned to read by us.
Please can you ensure you comment on Boom Reader once a week so that we know you are reading with your child and monitoring how frequently they are reading at home. We would also like to encourage the children to add any other texts they are reading at home onto Boom Reader and to log and comment on their own reading at least once a week.
If you need us to reprint your child's login details for Boom Reader, please let us know.
Please log on to the Letterjoin website to find 100s of great resources to help your child practise their handwriting!

In Geography this term we are learning about oceans and the impact pollution is having on our planet.
For your homework project we would like you to research how we, as citizens of the world, can help our oceans and prevent water pollution and create a poster to raise awareness. Your poster can focus on one idea (e.g. reducing our use of single use plastics or eating sustainably) or you can include a variety of different points.
Posters can be produced by hand or digitally. If you want to create yours digitally, you could use Adobe which is free of charge.
Projects are due in during the final week of term (week beginning Monday 23rd March).
Your posters will be shared in class and then kept safe by your class teacher and displayed around the school in June to raise awareness for World Oceans Day (8th June).
