Welcome to Reception's weekly newsletter!
The aim of this newsletter is to share with you what the children have been learning, exploring and discovering each week, as well as, to provide you with information and notices.
The mornings can be a tricky transition for some of our children but we are so proud of how independent they are becoming! To help them continue this progress—and to keep our small cloakroom area safe and clear—we kindly ask that you drop your child off at the main gate. Thank you for your ongoing support ♥️
This week we have been continuing our Core text ‘Errol's Garden’. Errol needs help to build his rooftop garden so has asked his neighbours to help. The children have talked about being helpful and kind and working together as a community to create something wonderful.
The children have made posters and leaflets to ask for help to create our own garden. They have used their phonics to write what they need such as 'pink flowers', 'big pots' and bags of soil'
Retell the story and talk about how great local community, family and friends are when we need help.
This week we have been revisiting our previously taught Phase 3 sounds and tricky words. We have been focusing on these sounds that lots of children have found tricky:
air ear ar or ai er th
Please focus on these sounds with your child this week and help them to secure them. You could orally blend words out loud ('I like to eat c-or-n'!) and get your child to blend the word together. You could also practise writing and reading them too. Keep it short and sweet, and most importantly fun!
Click on the video to hear how the phonemes (sounds) should sound. The video provides an example of how the children learn to read by sound talking and blending the phonemes (sounds) together. There is also a fun phonics blending and matching activity linked, that your child can do. We recommend the Phase 3 level to reinforce their learning.
Please continue to support your child with their 'tricky words'. These are words that cannot be segmented easily. As children can't blend them phonetically, they are taught to recognise them by sight. Here is a list of all the tricky words the children have learnt so far:
'is', 'I', 'the', 'put', 'pull', 'full', 'as', 'and', 'has', 'his', 'her' 'go', 'no', 'to, 'into' 'she', 'push', 'he', 'of', 'we', 'me', 'be', 'you', 'was', 'they', 'my' 'by 'all' 'are' 'sure' 'pure'
Remember, you can use the parent tab on the Little Wandle website for support: https://www.littlewandle.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
This week in maths, we have been looking at 3D shapes! We have been learning the names of these 3D shapes: Cube, Cuboid, Sphere, Cylinder, Cone and Pyramid.
We have talked about what they look like (flat faces and curved surfaces) and used our observation skills to describe the shapes carefully.
The children have loved playing and learning with shapes this week. They have build towers, played 'What shape is missing?' games and sorted real objects into the shape groups too.
We have also been practising our days of the week too. Please keep working on this with your child, sing the song, learn the signs and help them with their understanding of time.
Library
We are starting to visit our school library! This is a shared space, that is used by all the classes across the school, from nursery to Year 6. It is a very special place that the children will love visiting weekly with a chance to explore exciting books and help promote a love of reading. It is very important that these books are respected and returned weekly. If the books aren't returned, your child will not be able to choose another book until it is returned. Please talk with your child about taking care of books and looking after their belongings.
We are very excited for this new experience for the children. We hope that our weekly library session brings lots of joy and sparks curiosity and imagination that only books can bring!
Library day is WEDNESDAY for both Reception classes.
Thank you to everyone who has accessed our e-book learning platform 'Collins Hub' so far. It is great to see you reading the books at home and improving your decoding, blending and comprehension skills.
If you have not yet logged in and begun reading with your child, please do so as we continue to add new books weekly for you to read. Please watch the video on the 'books coming home' tab for support on how to read a wordless book with your child.
If you are having any problems logging in or accessing the platform, please let your child's class teacher know.
If you have some time over the Easter holidays, it would be wonderful if you could try one of these suggestions:
Fill your special diary with all the fun (and normal!) things you do. You could include pictures and photos, or drawings and writing of all the different things you get up to. Maybe you are visiting some family and want to include a photo or drawing of people who are important to you. Maybe you are growing some plants and want to keep a diary of how they grow. Maybe you have some great days out planned, or maybe you are just at home relaxing. Whatever it is, please include it in your diary to share. The children love sharing them and seeing what their friends get up too.
or
Keep practising your phonics and reading. You could play phonics games by hiding the tricky words or sounds around the house and see how quickly you can find and say them. You could write them out and draw pictures to match them. You could visit your local library and find new stories to share. You could log on to Collins Hub and read your favourite books you've had this year.
Please ensure your child's coat, jumper, cardigan, shoes etc are all clearly labelled with their name and that they bring in a named water bottle, filled with plain drinking water only, every day.
Please note that school drop off times are between 8:40 and 8:50. If you arrive after this time please go to the main office as class teachers will have sent their registers off by then.
A reminder that your children only need a book bag or small bag for school. Please try to avoid huge backpacks.
You should have received your child's 'Special Diary' for you to use at home. Please send them in on Mondays if you have things to share with the class during circle time.
We would really appreciate any donations of the following items;
any pairs of children's wellies and waterproofs that are no longer being used
yoghurt pots or other recyclable containers
cardboard boxes and kitchen roll tubes
Please give any donations to your child's class team.
