The APTA defines Duty as the commitment to meeting one’s obligations to provide effective physical therapist services to patients and clients, to serve the profession, and to positively influence the health of society.
I have taken part in fulfilling my duty to the IU DPT program by participating in student government within the IUI DPT program. During the Fall of 2024, my first semester as a DPT student, I was elected to the SPTO as the Secretary for our class. As the Secretary, I am responsible for attending our monthly meetings, taking meeting minutes, being a liaison for different APTA events by relaying that information to my class, and helping the President with anything she may need like helping to organize events. Thus far we have already organized and hosted a Cyclebar fundraiser to help fund the scholarship that sends students to CSM which was very exciting to be a part of planning. In the Fall of my second year (2024) the second year SPTO members gave a presentation about our position to the first year students before their election process. This experience has helped shape my understanding of the duty of PTs to serve the profession by giving me experience in serving my fellow students through monthly meetings that reflect what a clinic meeting would be like to explore ways to improve a clinical setting.
I participated in a presentation at Crispus Attucks High School, an early college high school in the IPS school district of downtown Indianapolis. This event was put on by a fourth-year medical student in the IU School of Medicine and was open to any healthcare profession within IU Indianapolis and was attended by medical students, PT students, OT students, and an anesthesiology assistant. This presentation was given to a class of juniors and seniors who were taking a class to become certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and was intended to expose them to other healthcare professions and what the schooling looks like and to answer any questions they have about college and graduate school. This experience helped my understanding of the duty that PTs have to the profession by giving me the opportunity to educate others about the profession and possibly influence their interest in the field.
