The APTA defines Altruism as the primary regard for or devotion to the interest of patients and clients, thus assuming the responsibility of placing the needs of patients and clients ahead of the physical therapist’s or physical therapist assistant’s self-interest.
The group of us that went to McCordsville Elementary
Nine classmates and myself went to McCordsville Elementary School as a part of our Health Promotions class. While there we conducted a needs assessment and implemented a 10 week program to promote health and fitness amongst these elementary schools children. As a part of the program we worked with the YMCA after school program which was an amazing opportunity. We also implemented a mileage club program in which we led the 4th and 5th grade kids through a dynamic warmup before having them walk or run around the track and counting their mileage to reach a goal of running all the way to Disney World. This experience helped me grow within my understanding of Altruism because it opened my eyes to the need that kids have to make everthing a game in order to facilitate their learning most effectively.
