The APTA defines compassion and caring as the desire to identify with or sense something of another’s experience; a precursor of caring and the concern, empathy, and consideration for the needs and values of others.
The Goodwin Exercise Group is an opportunity for IU DPT students to go to a local nursing home (George T. Goodwin nursing home) and lead exercises with the residents there. I went there with my classmate Candler and we took turns leading the residents through different upper body, core, and lower body exercises to help promote their overall health. This experience shows our compassion and caring to this group of individuals because we identify that the people in the nursing home are unable to access PT services because most of them cannot drive. We show our caring spirit by taking time out of our Thursdays to volunteer our time and provide them with a community of individuals that care for and promote healthy exercise.
