INSCRIBE Internship

INSCRIBE stands for Indiana Summer Clinical Immersion in Biomedical Engineering. During this internship I spent 5 weeks and over 80 hours shadowing in specialties including nephrology, physical medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and obstetrics. After identifying problems in the clinical setting, as teams of four students we were given one week to solve a problem of our choice. The problem my team chose to solve was the increased risk of falls in wheeled walker users due to misuse of the brakes. This project allowed me to expand on my CAD, presentation, and organizational skills. Additionally, I was educated on some of the financial aspects of healthcare and disparities unique to healthcare.

One day while shadowing with orthopedic surgery I got to speak with a prosthetist about their job and how prosthetics are made. We discussed the increased prevalence of BKAs or below the knee amputations since poor perfusion from type 2 diabetes leads to poor healing and infection in the lower limbs. We also discussed the financial difficulties associated with developing a custom made prosthetic.
