Once a year in Elementary, students showcase learning, explorations and achievements in the Arts with their families during their Spotlight on the Arts.
They share both the process of their learning and completed works of art and performances.
Grades one and two proudly shared their learning at the first spotlight of the year. Learning was focused around 'Who We Are'. In performing arts, students shared their understanding of the elements of the arts with an audience, while in the classrooms and galleries they showed how they used these elements in their portraiture unit centered around identity.
Gallery walks and reflections
During the first week of May, Kindergarten students shared their learning in the arts with families through class Informances. An Informance differs from a performance in that it is designed to educate an audience so they can share an understanding of our learning processes. It is centered around education, not solely around performance.
Families joined learners for a brief welcome in our Amphitheatre, before participating in ‘hands on’ performing arts activities alongside their child. Children’s visual arts processes were also shared through an annotated gallery walk and sharing of their journals and recent artworks.
The event showcased not only our accomplishments, but also our processes with the production showcasing the “behind-the-scenes” work and enabling a deeper understanding of what happens in our art spaces.
April 1st, 2022- How We Express Ourselves
This year the Grade One Assembly and Spotlight on the Arts events were combined as the unit was fully integrated with homeroom learning, PE and the arts.
Learners were eager to share their understanding of how ‘Light, colour and sound can be used to express our creativity’
In Visual Arts, learners experimented with primary and secondary colors. Students observed that different painting techniques create a variety of marks and sometimes even patterns. The experimental pour paintings gave students the opportunity to explore abstract painting techniques. Students made many observations about the colors mixing and creating new colors and shades.

In Performing Arts, Students showcased their understanding of how music and light can enhance a performance. To follow on from a rhythm and folk dance unit, learner's decided to create a dance using the rhythm sticks with glow tape. They thought about physical movements that would be interesting visually and used the form of the song to decide on the specific movement parts of the song.
The song we used for our performance was 'The Storm' by Fat Rat and Maisy Kay. We inquired into the language and meaning of the song and discovered the language Na'vi was created for the movie Avatar. The song literary translates to mean:
I come from the stairway to the sky
With all your heart, listen, look
The rhythm of the rain and sun
And the beat of the hearts fill me
Watch the video below to see our process. Unfortunately there were issues with the quality of the recording in the Blackbox theatre so our final performance cannot be shared.
Ms. Olds and Ms. Margarita were delighted to host the Grade 4 & 5 Spotlight on the Arts on campus, after four months of on campus learning. The grade levels were audiences for each other in the Black Box for Performing Arts since the community was not yet able to be on campus. The work of Visual Art of displayed in Innovasia and outside in the amphitheatre for all students to see. Enjoy highlights of our work and the performance videos below.

The Grade 5's learnt about the traditions of mask making in Visual Arts class. Students looked at cultural masks from all around the world and the symbolism behind mask designs. Construction was a focus in this unit as well as scale and form when designing mask features. Towards the end of our unit we focused on tonal greyscale art and positive and negative space. Students created portraits of animals inspired by African safari. Detail in shading was a highlight for students as they learned about the principles of light and dark contrast.
Please note - the learning videos below celebrate the grade wide learning our recent unit 'Who We Are'. For information regarding your child's INDIVIDUAL learning in the Arts - please visit your child's seesaw journal and filter by clicking on the performing arts or visual arts folder.
