Studies have shown that when we sing the hormones endorphins and oxytocin are released. Endorphins are associated with feelings of pleasure, and oxytocin has been found to lower anxiety and stress, and enhance feelings of trust. The IBPYP Arts scope and sequence further explains that ‘Music delights and stimulates, soothes and comforts us’.
Our Inchoir has been a popular activity with our students for several years now. Choir takes place out of school hours and during the year is open to any students from grade 1-5. This page showcases some of our choir songs, concerts, videos and reflections.
Our October concert featured our grade 2-5 choir performing ;
We Go Together
Yesterday
Keep it Up
Three Little Birds
Peace I Leave with You
I Ku Mau Mau
We were grateful to have the opportunity to also perform at the WIG Christmas fair at the end of 2022...singing a short and festive repertoire of Feliz Navidad, My Favourite Things and Peace I leave with you.
On the 26th of May, InChoir held their second concert of the year...this time to an audience of friends and family. Grade 2 learners were invited to join in November, and our choir numbers grew to over 70 students. It was wonderful to have family members in the audience and the children were so proud and confident!
The short, varied repertoire consisted of 8 songs;
Cheeky Little Fantail
I Won't Grow Up
Octopus's Garden
Dandelion
Pepeha
Riptide
Reflections
Hard Knock Life
May Concert

InChoir were thrilled to re-start in mid November with grade 3 to 5 after a long break due to covid restrictions. Hearing the halls filled with song again filled our hearts! InChoir met regularly on Thursday afternoons and built their repertoire of simple canons, unison, partner songs and more complex vocal harmonies. The group of dedicated and enthusiastic upper elementary students shared with a small audience of on campus staff and shared the concert for families at home virtually. It was uplifting to have our students performing once again! Their concert repertoire included some beautiful canons, Something in the Water, Childsong, Rainbow Connection, Do Re Mi and Surface pressure.
“My favourite thing about In Choir is hearing 98 children’s voices singing together, it is one of the most beautiful and powerful sounds I have ever heard.” Parent feedback 2019
The name 'InChoir' came about after brainstorming ideas with the children. They felt the word encompassed both the school's philosophy and focus on the arts. Workshops were also run to generate student ideas for the choir shirts. In 2019- 2020 - InChoir was at it's largest, we had 103 children from G1-5 involved.

Sign language to 'Don't Give Up On Me' by Andy Grammar. We were set to sing this live with the sign language on screen before Covid thwarted our plans. They sounded beautiful in two part harmony!

Humble beginnings - lunchtime rehearsals
Some of our first Glee members 2016
Prior to InChoir, ISPP had Glee club which was open to year 3-5 students during lunchtimes. The group performed at assemblies and did small outdoor concerts in the outdoor ampitheatre .
They performed at Elementary assemblies, had a lunchtime concert in the amphitheatre, and recorded their voices for a global choir song for the 2016 Olympics. While these opportunities allowed students to work collaboratively and gain awareness of the audience, Glee Club was not just about performing. Students sang a repertoire of songs to develop an understanding of musical elements such as pitch, harmony and rhythm, and to build confidence.
When we asked the students ‘what are the benefits of singing?’ they replied;
“I feel anticipation in my heart before I sing and it inspires me.” So Young
“It fills me up with joy and happiness.” Sofia
“I just like to sing because it is really relaxing.” Oceana
“When I sing I feel like I can escape everything else that’s going on.” Olivia
And they may be onto something! Studies have shown that when we sing the hormones endorphins and oxytocin are released. Endorphins are associated with feelings of pleasure, and oxytocin has been found to lower anxiety and stress, and enhance feelings of trust.
