Title: “It’s Broken Na”
Size: 35x45x25
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: This piece was based on my cousin’s message to me expressing how something dear to her broke. The piece reflects the meaning “it is broken already”, creating the assumption that nothing is perfect, that all things are broken to a certain extent. The face of peace serenity of the Buddha contrasts the chaotic background while the sharpness of the six triangles of smashed mirror adds to the chaos and symbolize the six aspects of health. The mirror reflects the viewer and makes the piece more personal while also fracturing their face and making it inorganic.

Title: Glitch
Size: 45x61
Media: Digital
Statement: My self-portrait, entitled Glitch, is representative of how my inner thoughts and perceptions have been hugely shaped by the media and technology of today. As both a person and an artist, I feel my life revolves around the world of digital media, from music to television to the internet, which is even visible in the style of my art. I am particularly influenced by Asian media and culture, which I feel is incredibly vibrant, interesting and wild. I decided to portray these influences in Glitch with bright neon signs, Japanese characters, and distortion glitch effects.

Title: Cultures Within
Size: 61x61
Media: Mixed Media on canvas
Statement: My piece, showcases different images and designs encased in a plastic balloon. I wanted to emulate my artist’s concept idea of having the main body of the piece be focused in the center, without any distinct background. I wanted to illustrate my different cultural influences through the images I drew. The plastic balloon represents my mostly Filipino culture. I want to show that I am Filipino on the outside, yet culturally diverse on the inside. The cultural influences inside include my Japanese influence, as I am half-Japanese, more Filipino influences, and other international influences I got from being in ISM.

Title: “Sa Duyan ng Dagat” (In the Cradle of the Ocean)
Size: 50x61x25
Media: Clay
Statement: Through this piece I wanted to encapsulate the tranquility of being at home, which for me is the Philippines. Thus I chose to create a coral reef sculpture to symbolize my home in that I perceive both as colorful, lively, and familiar. I glazed the sculpture with a glossy finish which creates a soaked effect. I also imitated the movement of light underwater by manually moving three light sources. So, I created a video which captures the movement of light and shadow underwater, helping not only bring the sculpture to life but create the feeling of being at home.

Title: This is ME: My Mirror
Size: 61x101
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: This piece (two paintings made into one) represents the collision of two cultures, one that is my birth culture (South Korea) whilst the other is my adopted culture (Philippines). This work aims to show the collision through the different mediums and symbolism through the distinct cultural items such as the tarsier, sampaguita flowers, mugungwha flowers, and the hahoetal (traditional mask); as well as the distinct fashion the two portraits are adorned. Nevertheless, the work also shows the fusion of these two cultures, illustrated primarily by the two arms linked to each other despite their differences.

Title: Life of Pi-napple
Size: 10x10x20
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: This art piece was produced in order to demonstrate how I feel toward the Philippines, the country I am currently living in. I used the hand to represent myself, Japanese peaches to indicate my inclination toward Japan, and pineapples surrounding them to show how I am being surrounded by the Filipino culture, and being influenced gradually. All of these objects are on a ship, which symbolizes my journey.

Title: Wild Imagination
Size: 25x43
Media: Ink on paper
Statement: Being a human, emotion is what makes us different from any other life. Any tiny detail in any of our body can express our feeling. This works consists of evoking the emotion of happiness and being careless and just having a greatest moment in life. I used a fine line marker to outline and draw every single details in the work. A professional markers were used to render the entire work.

Title: Leaf me alone
Size: 50x61
Media: Acrylic on canvas
Statement: Being both a social extrovert, and at times a reflective introvert, I wanted to explore the internal contrasts I often experience while living in the inherently collectivist, sociable culture of the Philippines. I play with the idea of collectivism vs. individualism, where many Asian countries fall into the former, and many sub-societies in the Anglo-sphere fall into the latter. I identify with both the Filipino and American race, often finding myself tangled in a cross-cultural paradox. While interconnectedness with others plays a central role in my life, the introverted side of me often needs to find time alone to recharge. The symbol of the Filipino palms alludes to the fast-paced, uncontrollable extrovert-nature of our country, where people love spending time with others. My reluctance to consistently embrace this extroversion is emphasized in the facial expression which reveals a distress caused by the encroaching leaves.

Title: Snow Lite
Size: 61x91
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: For this piece I was inspired greatly by pop culture. The Snow White is a metaphor for the image that people think girls are meant to look like, as she was the first disney princess meaning she was the first to set the standards for beauty. She is also made of magazines since this media platform has a huge impact on setting beauty standards of women. Simultaneously, Snow White is alone in an enchanted forest although she choses to ignore her surroundings only for seeking more beauty and appreciation from society. This is much like the way millennials act nowadays. They chose ignore what’s happening in life to pay attention to their egoistic needs and self value.

Title: Birds on a Hand
Size: 30x40
Media: Ink and chalk on paper
Statement: In school I felt that we don't have much room to express ourselves in our work, so in this piece I took the opportunity to express these thoughts by using a balance of colour and ink. I enjoyed making this piece because I had lots of room to choose what I wanted to do and share my vision. I chose to draw a crow because it can symbolise many different things in our lives, including the bad and the good. Overall, I really liked this unit because it allowed me a lot of freedom and artistic initiative.

Title: Black Sheep
Size: 61x61
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: Through this artwork I was able to portray my inner emotions as to how I am easily swayed by the opinion of others. This characteristic is relatable to that of a “sheep”. Not only was this piece of art able to expose my inner self but also was highly inspired by an artist that I truly admire, Francis Bacon. Francis Bacon is a surrealist who expresses his artwork through animal- like personalities entailed within a human being. By borrowing his style of drawing of mixing human and animal expressions I was able to create my own original piece by using myself and sheep.

Title: Octopus Soup-reme
Size: 43x30x7
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: This is an artwork that contemplates the cyclic nature of life and it's beauty. How one natural element feeds into another to form new life. The circle of life in one small snapshot.

Title: Untitled
Size: 33x18x12
Media: Clay
Statement: The playful mixture of additive and subtractive textures provide a palpable representation of the bustle in one’s life, similar to the liveliness tucked away by the coral in the ocean. The wide diversity of coral reefs allowed flexibility with the different textures and colors used which all play a role in the bright mood this piece portrays. In its entirety, the mysteries, qualities, and decay of life take form in this upbeat vessel. In addition, the balance captured in this five-sided sculpture illuminate how your concerns, curiosity, and innocence can either spike out and hurt you, or crater and comfort you.

Title: Fantastical
Size: 45x137
Media: Pencil on paper
Statement: This series depicts unrealistic and unrestrained imagination, with me and my friends as subjects. The themes atop each head are the subject’s imagination. For my own, travel represents my unrestrained imagination because all the places illustrated have influenced me. Patterns were placed on each face; for mine, I show road maps. The composition of each face changes, beginning in a bent down direction, and moving up towards the sky, resembling slowly waking up from the dream world of imagination.

Title: Nude with Flower
Size: 35x45
Media: Acrylic on canvas
Statement: This piece was inspired by Filipino culture and environment. The subject is a representation of me, and the Heliconia plants around her represent the rich culture of the Philippines. The plants are hanging all around the girl, making her stand out from the environment, but the flowers on her head suggest that she belongs there nonetheless. The slightly unrealistic proportions and stronger form of the body makes her seem animalistic, almost like a tiger in the jungle caught by surprise. She holds a neutral yet strong gaze with the viewer because she is empowered by the culture of her environment.

Title: My fans and I
Size: 76x101
Media: Ink on paper
Statement: The title of this piece serves three purposes. The first, and most prominently, is the woman and the subject of the piece as the title translates directly into “The Girl”. Next, is the weather pattern that refers to, causing quite unpredictable and sporadic weather in the Philippines - which is represented in the fans. The last purpose is the fact that the title itself is in Spanish, which reflects upon the Spanish heritage and culture that is still prevalent in the Philippines, seen through the woman’s dress. The fans depict the Philippine heat, new industrialisation and the inability to get what we need.

Title: Skulpture
Size: 22x22x17
Media: Plaster and acrylic
Statement: This piece is meant to represent the breakdown of the valuability of human life. It was influenced by Damien Hirst’s work ‘For the Love of God’, a skull made out of a platinum mold and decorated with diamonds. Furthermore, the concept of mystery and valuability are influenced by crop circles and the patterns of Egyptian coffins that hold the remains of humans. Thus, taking the theme of Hirst’s pieces, which involves around the concept of death, and combined it with his style of making look valuable and showing the value of humans, this piece shows my view on humanity.

Title: Yeye
Size: 91x121
Media: Acrylic on canvas and paper
Statement: My grandfather passed away recently and I wanted to dedicate this painting to him. I chose to create a larger version of an "Ang Bao" (red envelope with money). In Chinese culture, Ang Bao is given to children from elders especially during special occasions. In this analogy, the best Ang Bao wasn't any money but the metaphorical Ang Bao of my grandfather. Ang bao is also a sign of luck, love and prosperity; however, my relationship with my grandfather had a more profound and extraordinary impact than any amount of money ever could. It was not the material gain that I valued, but him himself and his essence. That's why in my artwork, there are different paintings and drawings of my grandfather's memories that represents the money or value inside the red envelope - in this case, my red canvas.

Title: Whimsey
Size: 61x81
Media: Graphic Design
Statement: I’ve always felt like plants bring life to things, whether it be rooms or pictures. This piece was enjoyable to create because it just gave me such a sense of peace, which is nice in the daily stresses of life. The style was inspired by artist Eric Proctor. For the whales, they were originally hiding, but I thought why are they hiding? It’s a lovely sunny day by a fun looking pier. They should be having fun, so that’s the mood I went for. A fun weekend at the pier.

Title: Frida
Size: 61x81
Media: Photography
Statement: I thought that the original painting was very interesting and I wanted to recreate it. To make sure that the picture looked a lot like the original picture I adjusted the lighting to make it look similar and used makeup to make my model look more like Frida Kahlo. I picked some flowers and leaves, the flowers I put in my models hair and I taped the leaves to the wall so they would create a similar background to the one in the picture, in retrospect I should’ve also added some sticks in the background to make it look more rough. I also edited the little banner at the bottom of the painting into the picture to give the picture a nice final touch. I don’t think that the picture is pretty but it is not supposed to be because the original isn’t either, and it wasn’t supposed to be, so it fits well with Kahlo’s ideas.

Title: Boy with a Pearl Earring
Size: 61x81
Media: Photography
Statement:
I’ve recreated a painting called “Girl with a pearl earring” by Jan Vermeer. I’ve tried various ways to make the same mood between the original painting and my work. I used my brother as my model, and used materials that I can easily get such as my mom’s brown dress and brown scarf, blue long socks, tissues, and I’ve put my lipstick on my brother. Since the painting “Girl with a pearl earring” has soft and gentle white light, I couldn’t exposed light directly to my brother. I’ve turn on the white light on the ceiling and placed my brother right bottom. As a result, I could make similar lighting as original painting, and make my brother more stand out. For editing, I’ve increased the clarity to make it more like painting, and bring out more black and white.

Title: First Winter
Size: 61x76
Media: Acrylic on canvas
Statement: I remember the first time I saw snow, it was in Kazakhstan, when I was visiting my grandparents. Back then, I was in so much awe since I had spent the majority of my life in a tropical country. To be able to sink my feet into the crunchy ice that lay on the ground, was something beyond my imagination. I'll never forget going up to the mountains, Shymbulak, in Almaty, that was the first time I really got to appreciate snow for all it's beauty. As it lay comfortably atop the peaks of the mountains I couldn't help but feel so much joy and inspiration. To this day, this memory sticks by me, when prompted with the task of painting a childhood memory I couldn't help but bring my memory to life on the canvas!

Title: Embrace
Size: 66x66
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: Throughout my life I have constantly had to move and say goodbye to the close friends that I have made. Despite the fact that I have said goodbye so many times, it will never become easier. In this piece I display how hugging is a very intimate action, as it represents the trust and love that a person has for someone else. I chose to use string because it symbolises that no matter what, I will always still be connected to my best friend.

Title: I’m Yours
Size: 38x55x25
Media: Mixed Media
Statement: This piece is made from the song I’m Yours by Alessia Cara, specifically the song lyrics: “And I promised I would never let me hurt anymore.” Using plaster, paint and foam, this piece was made to represent self love as the lyrics state that the person is refusing to let herself hurt. To do this, flowers were used to represent happiness and beautiful thoughts which is why the flowers are coming from the area where the brain is supposed to be. This piece follows the theme of pop culture, specifically song lyrics as this piece represents the song, I’m Yours.

Title: Mama and Lola
Size: 45x61
Media: Acrylic on canvas
Statement: Before starting this piece, I was in a sad place and went to my mom for advice. She inspired me to be hopeful and know that I would find happiness again. During this time, my lola (grandma) was in and out of the hospital, which reminded me that it wasn’t the end of the world and there were many things to be grateful for. And for that, I wanted to thank them and depict them in such a way that showcases their radiant beauty, how they exude confidence and were a beacon of light in the dark state I was in.
