Better?

60 x 100 cm

Painting

This piece reflects the norm in our modern society, where people are often pressured to change the nature of themselves in order to fit in with people around them. The person blending into the background, slowly becoming invisible, represents how people try to blend into their surroundings and change themselves in order to become like others, and losing their identity in the process. The background showing the landscape of the ocean and the tides, represents the voices of how other people influence us into thinking and believing that we should change ourselves to become like them (so that we are "better").

Bill

44.5x50x50.5 cm

Mixed Media Sculpture

Media has a lot of influence in how we see ourselves and everything around us. We are all different individuals with different perspectives on what we see on TV, but the simple fact we have a more informed opinion indicates TV affects us. We are a more educated (what that means is up to you) population, but to a degree, overexposure makes it hard for us to form our own thoughts on issue. Our minds become cluttered, given the various layers within the frame. I’ve represented media through a puppet hand controlling us, the wire figures.

Anxiety

56 x 71 cm

Painting/Mixed Media

Anxiety is a visual representation of what I physically feel when having a server Anxiety attack. The feeling of my chest being pried open is represented through the broken sternum, and the hooks and rope represent the issues that cause the anxiety, essentially leaving my heart exposed. The warm color of my heart is contrasted with the cold background, the cold out weighing the warmth. Two of the threads are multi colored, specifically representing relationships and the issues they bring to the table.

"I'm ok"

46 x 61 cm

Mixed Media

For this artwork, I got an inspiration from an image on Twitter, which depicts hands of a person, clutching, and has a quote “I’m ok” below. It inspired me how people keep their real feelings behind words. People are tempted to hide their emotions, especially when they are mad and depressed. The strings show how real feelings are being ripped and changed by words. I believe that anger can make people cry and crying shows the weakness of the person. Thus the two artworks are connected to each other as they show the connection between these two emotions.

Soon to be

43.6 x 63.1 cm

Drawing

This artwork is a realism pencil drawing of a cub. Lion is known as a carnivorous animal that is hard to approach, but the innocent and harmless feeling is depicted by the only use of pencil and the precise touches of the furs. In contrast, the sparkling eyes show the ambition that is hidden deep inside the smooth cub. When drawing, I used sharp pencils of different darkness and cut erasers for white fur or hair. I also detailed the parts that should stand out, while smoothing the part that is in the back.

Court of Brick and Memories

138 x 60.5 cm

Painting

This work is a nostalgic piece representing my hometown, Podkowa Leśna, Poland. It began as a mixed media on canvas collage, inspired by the work of Carol Nelson. My first goal was creating texture by layering different types of paper and warm shades of acrylic paint. Then, I linked the rectangles and squares that had formed on the triptych, to the shapes of actual buildings in my hometown. This was done by incorporating multiple pencil sketches of said buildings into the work. In mentioning bricks, the title refers to the buildings, as well as all the memories I have of my town.

Ingredients of Life

30x30x30 cm

Sculpture

This artwork is showing my identity as a sculpture. I have thought that one's identity is like blocks, made up of many components such a genes, physical appearance, memory, language, and desire. Each spheres represent different elements that are contributing to make one's identity. I have used wires as a basis of this artwork, and branched out to various other materials in order to make a contrast to wires. Tangled wires have been used to show that human identity is mingled, and somehow, interrelated.

The Head / The Heart

Series of 2: 34.5x55.5cm

Digital Prints

This piece is a character design project, depicting one being that embodies logic and reason, and another that embodies instinct and emotion. I created juxtaposition between the two by making the former, a robot in a suit, surrounded by and clothed with cold colours, and the latter having more fantastic and flamboyant appearance, against a backdrop of warm colours. The purpose of the larger project of which they are a part is to call out how we all like to believe we are logical but in reality are all loyal to our personal beliefs and impressions.

Cabin

30 seconds

Animation

Cabin is an animation of a home depicting the different stages of life. The top of the piece represents birth and youth, the middle two floors adulthood, and the basement old age and death.

I establish this using numerology– Youth being full of binary choices, I placed two of everything in the upper room. Adulthood, featuring abandonment of a black and white worldview, has three of everything on its floors. Old age, often being about the solemn anticipation of singular death, has one of everything. I expressed these choices via the number of light sources, furnishing, animals, etc.

Man

Series of 3: 126cmx65cm

Photography

"Man" is a project that aims to capture man's quest to find meaning in his own life. It follows Albert Camns' philosophy presented in "The Myth of Sissyphus": once we, in a miserable state, question the inherit absurdity of our own life, "everything begins in that weariness tinged with amazement". I shot this on 8x10 film. The titles of each piece ironically chronicle the man's journey: they initially appear to narrate a suicide, but the true meaning lies in that Camn's philosophy acts in direct confrontation to that act. The title and pose present this as a piece of rebirth.

Perceptions of the Individual

42 x 59.4cm

Photography

We tend to believe that images represent a single truth, and our perception of the world, especially what we see, is the only accurate representation of the way things are. In this piece, I explored how images can deceive us, and more specifically, that the absolute reliance on our perception when it comes to people's characteristics will lead us to a misunderstanding of individuals and their characteristics.

Listen

18.5 x 23.2 cm

Wet plate photography

In my photos, the subject is staring directly at the camera, but while listening to music and ignoring the viewer, showing how, especially in the new (my) generation, many people hear but do not listen. This is further exemplified by the contrast between the medium, a very old style of photography called wet-plate photography, and the subject which features modern technology, the headphones. Wet-plates have the ability to highlight subjects' eyes in great detail, showing the intensity of their stares. To this, black acrylic plates must be coated with first collodion, essentially liquid plastic, then a photosensitive chemical in silver nitrate; the photo must be taken while the plate is still wet after being coated.

Untitled

Series of 3: 76 x 75.5 cm

Painting

This collective piece represents the human condition, specifically that of adolescent males in this world as experienced through my eyes. I intend to employ this through the gritty and raw feelings to show, how, in this day and age, males have to live up to certain expectations, even though they may come from different backgrounds. Backgrounds may include culture, past experiences (such as hardships and possible trauma), and personal relations. This is shown through the different types of materials used as they all show some sort of meaning as to what the different backgrounds are.

The Riot

42.5x32cm

Photography

I created an homage to banksy’s work through photography. It shows how both sides of the riots want peace even if they’re taking it in a violent manner. The peace they are looking for is different as the picture on the left depicts a unhappy rioter with the peace that is being enforced and wanted by the guard in the picture on the right. I’m trying to show that the beauty they wanted is different since the rioter is holding a more “vibrant beauty”, while the guard is holding a more “bland beauty”.

Blood Vessels

80x50x150cm

Sculptural Installation (wire and tape)

Blood vessels carry crucial elements for body to survive. I wanted to ironically use this system which carries polluted qualities, which, may be immoral characteristics that I gain as I grew up. The clear marbles hanging besides the blood vessels display an attracting visual appearance unlike what it being carried, representing one part of human growth. People tend to judge things by their visual factors and deny the fact that what it actually holds is the opposite of what they thought. The color of the shirt is black and it affects myself.

The Crow

68.5 x 37.5 cm

Painting/Mixed Media

Censorship affects us all in different ways, limiting our knowledge, wisdom, and understand of subjects. Throughout history, the crow has been scorned and unappreciated in society, and as such, we found it suitable to use the crow as the symbol for censorship and banned books. The crow historically has been a messenger which brought sorrowful news within their message routes. Meanwhile, Odin, the Norse God, had many crows as his eyes, which brought him knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom is what helps us have better insight into our world, which things such as banned books give us.

0

42.0 x 59.4cm

Photography

This artwork is inspired by the result of the 2016 US Election. The colours represent the major parties that have been conflicting for many years, as the colours are coming from opposite sides and meeting in the middle. I am trying to communicate that the United States of America is a divided country amongst two different ideologies. This was conveyed by having a close-up on the subject that is showing distress and manipulating the lighting so the two lights are perfectly equal on her face. It is showing that the country is divided and it is affecting the American people.

The City

68 x 37 cm

Printmaking/Mixed Media

As the society becomes more international, people in the community have different meanings of home. The combination of famous buildings around the world represent the different meanings of home, yet, they are placed in one box to show that even though people have the different meanings of home, the main notion is that home is a place where is safe and is filled with happiness. On the glasses are definitions of "home" in our perspectives. The mirrors are placed under the glass to make it easier to read messages.

Powered by its own life

42x59.4cm

Photography

This work symbolises freedom, and also the motivations that serve people to live with their uniqueness. Bird is the symbol of independence and perspective because they fly independently in the sky. The sky represents the world or experience, and the birds freeing themselves from the restraints to face the world. When taking the photo, I adjusted my camera to high-speed shutter in order to capture the movement of the birds. I also used dark exposure to demonstrate the difference in distance and create dimensions of the work. The increase in the saturation is applied to create strong color and to communicate the meaning of the artwork.

Faded

23.8 x 40.2 cm

Photography

For this project, my work is done by using double exposure in photoshop to illustrate the surreal relationship between man and nature. I decided to do this project because I believe that humans are nature, as the forms of natural world appeals directly to us as humans. Nature also offers a complexity of ever-changing patterns, as the awareness of nature will lead to changes in the awareness of people causing them to make healthy life choices. Moreover, I believe that we recognize our senses, mind, and thoughts through nature.

Hands in Motion

Series of 5: 40 x 27 cm

Photography

For this artwork, I choose "hands" as the subject matter. It reveals people's emotion in various ways. They are a physical features that we all have in common, yet they are completely unique. I wanted to convey the idea that no matter how different we may look, in the end we are all the same. By scanning, it emphasizes the film grains then looking at the negatives through our eyes. Looking at film grains, I felt a simple beauty in small dots creating lines, lights, and shapes, which is why I chose to highlight the grains.

Playing dress up

73.4 x 93.7 cm

Painting

This painting is depicting the overflowing curiosity that might mislead the baby to lost of innocence. It is shown by the coexistence of the baby and features that do not suit the young age. Oil paint and oil pastel were used to give a realistic feeling, and variety of colors was used to illustrate the inundating curiosity. Yellow is usually a symbol of innocence and joy, but darkness is added to yellow, which represents decay and lost of purity in this sense.

Only Child

4 x 61 x 63 cm

Mixed Media Installation: Spray Paint, Cardboard, Goldleaf, Wood

One of the many ideas I had to let go off while growing up was this idea that the world revolved around me - the only child. This isn't to say I was narcissistic, but when I was younger I was self-confident, which evolved into self consciousness. This artwork is a shrine to my younger self, who was use to being pampered by the world as a precious object.

Internal Desire

61 x 45.7 cm

Painting

This artwork is about my internal desires which I now realise cannot be accomplished: to become an artist like Van Gogh, or and astronaut like Valentina Tereshkova. I wanted to actualize my desire and dreams through the field of art. The bottom left part of the face represents Van Gogh, who made a number of works that inspired me, while the top right part of it is Valentina Tereshkova, who is the first woman to have flown in space. Below the face it is myself wearing my ISB uniform.

Childhood memories

52.3 x 37.2

Photography

This is a picture of my lego that I built with my brother. From this, I wanted the viewers to remember their childhood, as lego usually symbolize youth. I built a prison scene and took the picture from the inside as if we are in jail. This represents how, as we grow up, our childhood is locked away in the back of our memory. In turn, I want the viewers to realize that we shouldn’t let that happen and cherish these moments that we will never get back.
