SUPERMARKETS & FOOD

Generally hours are 8:00 - 20:00. Netto, Aldi and Lidl are the biggest value for money as discounter food retailers. Rewe has a late opening store that can stay open as late as 22:00. Rewe also delivers with an online option.  Watch out. With the exception of afternoons in downtown Hannover near the station, no shops are open on a Sunday and many close early evening. You can however obtain food shopping at Lidl in the main train station on a Sunday (it’s small and horrendously busy) and might get a pint of UHT milk at the Petrol/Gas station if you get caught without one. Shopping for international food -here a few options.

Galeria Kaufhof (near HBF) sells some international groceries in their food department in the basement.

An Indian/Asian Store that sells spices and other things like PG Tips tea very cheaply is on Marienstrasse in Südstadt.  Also check out India House,  Diguo Asia (on Hamburger Allee). 

HOME GOOD PURCHASE

Ikea: 

• Hannover has two Ikeas one at Expo Park in the South East of the city and one in Isernhagen a good way outside the city ring North of the city. Before you trek to the latter check you are going to the closest one which is likely to be Expo Park.

Sofaloft: 

• A multi floored wonderland of home furnishings SofaLoft is in an area close to the city, next-door to a pet store, large Edeka supermarket, Bauhaus (like Homedept /B&Q), a Kik and various other shops.

Moma:

• Moma is slightly more upscale than Ikea. May take a few weeks for something to come to the warehouse and costs for delivery to your home. It’s open 10-8pm, Behnstrasse 3, 30519 Hanover

Hoffner:

• Höffner is more upscale again. You can get some good deals. Has a fantastic playground and reasonably priced restaurant on the top floor where you can leave your kids for free while you browse or just have a rest!

Electrical goods

• Saturn and Media Markt are in several locations. Here they sell everything electrical; hairdryers; extension cords; TVs; Kettles printers to Washing machines or other large appliances. A washing machine can be ordered and delivered within 72 hours at Media Markt. 

• Waschbaer is a good place to go for used appliances

Garden/Home Goods

• Obi, Bauhaus and Hagebau are three options. You can compare the three here. From lighting and interior paint to outdoor and indoor plants, blinds and tools.

Pharmacy

• Big name Pharmacies include Apotheke, Rossmann and DM.

Amazon.de

• Amazon is a reliable way to order a huge variety of goods. Set the delivery to the school address as German Amazon delivery firms will not leave it on your doorstep if you are out.  You can link a bank account to the site or a credit card but not a debit card.
