Like the public services, it is excellent. When you start at ISHR, we arrange a meeting with the health insurance company most employees are with. There are two main options. The first is Techniker Krankenkasse which is a public Healthcare option. Almost everyone on our staff including the leadership team is with TK. You don’t need to worry about registering until you arrive. You will be covered from August 1st.

However, you are free to choose your own private health insurance.

Your health insurance also covers your children and a spouse who doesn’t work. You don’t have to register with a particular doctor, you can go to whichever one you like. If you get sick, the school pays you your full salary for up to six weeks. After that, your health insurance company pays around 75% of your salary. If you are hospitalised, you have to pay €10.00 a day, but otherwise everything is covered by your health insurance.

If you need a specialist appointment (Überweisung) you generally have to get a referral from your doctor for you or your child if you want the Health Insurance to cover the cost.
