Use of fidgets

Why should it be done?

  • Provides sensory support and integration

  • Helps calm students who are anxious

  • Provides stimulation to help students with ADHD focus

  • Allows students to release some of their energy

  • Teaching students how to use sensory tools can help them with self-control and calming down

When should it be done?

  • During instruction or classroom activities

  • During activities that do not accommodate for the students need for movement

  • When students are faced with an environment that causes anxiety or being overwhelmed

How should it be done?

  • Teach students that these are learning tools and not toys

  • Set up rules, procedures, and consequences, similar to what you already have in place

  • Explicitly teach rules to students

  • Determine how to handle questions if only certain students will have access to these

  • Determine location for fidgets to be stored when not being used

  • Provide a variety of fidgets allowing students to select what works best for them
