Break Down Directions and Assignments
Why should it be done?
Assists students in focusing on specific parts and tasks
Students who have ADHD struggle with breaking up directions
Allows students to have small attainable goals
Some students become overwhelmed when too much information is presented at once
Increases comprehension and follow through
When should it be done?
When students are showing signs of being overwhelmed
When you are aware that a student has ADHD
When a student turns in assigments that are often incorrect
When a student is often reluctant to start assignments
How should it be done?
Re-read directions to the student one part of one task at a time
Simplify your language
Be very concise and cleaer
When done explaining one part of re-reading one section of the directions, demonstrate for the student and point to what you are talking about on the page
Allow the student a chance to repeat and explain each part of the directions back to you and then all the directiosn afer they have all been gone over
After explainin the directions fully, do one or several problems or items with the student
Allow student to hae breaks while working on the assignment
