Change of seating

Why should it be done?

  • Gives students a sense of power and control

  • Allows students to be comfortable (an uncomfortable student is a distracted one)

  • Removes students away from distractions

  • Allows student to be around students that exhibit positive behavior

  • Allows opportunity for sensory input and stimulation that can help students focus

When should it be done?

  • When students are struggling to stay in their area

  • When students are very hyper

  • When sitting in one spot or a particular area is not allowing student(s) to be successful

How should it be done?

  • Speak with the class about allowing students about changing seats

  • Inform them of your expectations (they should know that changing seats or standing is not free time)

  • Provide models of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors

  • Allow students to practice while you monitor

  • When you feel comfortable you can start implementing in your classroom
