Jim Smith’s education career in the public schools has spanned more than two decades. Starting out as a social studies teacher at Centennial Middle School in Minnesota, he developed a fascination with assessment early in his career that continues today. As the school began to adopt a PLC model, Jim developed an assessment and data position to help teachers develop collaborative common assessments and to use the ensuing results. During this time the school became one of the highest-performing schools in the state and won the School Spotlight Award from the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation for high levels of student achievement and innovative educational practices. This work continued at Twin Cities International Elementary School in Minneapolis where Jim worked as the Data and Assessment Coordinator. This school featured a highly collaborative structure of classroom assessment focusing on collecting results, responding to these data and refining assessment design. The school has been named a “Beat the Odds” school for work in advancing student learning and closing achievement gaps. Jim continues following his passion for assessment and data by working as a national educational presenter, trainer and consultant as an Assessment Associate with Solution Tree. Jim received a bachelor of science in secondary education from the University ofMinnesota and a master of arts in education from Hamline University.
