Nursery

Literacy

This term our Global theme is Social Justice and Equity.  We will be exploring this theme through the use of our core text ‘You Choose Fairy Tales’  by Nick Sharrat.  We will also be using some traditional fairy tales such as ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ to immerse ourselves in the language of storytelling.  We will be listening and retelling stories using actions and pictures, and exploring the different components that make up a story, i.e. characters, settings, plot.   We will also be looking at the behaviour of the villain and how we might be able to encourage that character to make the right choices.

Phonics

Our focus will be on Foundations for Phonics which is part of Little Wandle, using rhymes and stories. They will be planned activities linked to the rhymes which will support children's understanding to be able to respond to questions. Environmental sounds will also be done in small groups. Children will also be involved in games to support their blending skills.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be exploring the importance of caring and sharing.  We will be encouraging the children to show sensitivity to other people’s feeling and needs, and what we can do to help and include others when they are excluded.  Children will be encouraged to ask questions and to suggest ways that they could solve a problem.  We want to promote children's independence and individuality, but also promote our children to be sensitive to the needs of others.

Maths

This half term, we will continue our number journey by using the Number blocks and a variety of objects for example the number of letters in their names. Children will also be introduced to positional and directional language such as finding hidden objects by following instructions 'turn left' 'look up' etc. Children will also continue to develop their understanding of number by solving real life number problems. Finally children will end the half term by learning about sequences. E.g. Days of the week and introducing first, second and third. Nursery children will have the opportunities to learn these skills through focused activities and independent play.

Expressive arts and design

We will be creating a display focusing on Goldilocks and the Three Bears this half term. This will include using different materials  and techniques to tell the story through our artwork. We will use a variety of different techniques including drawing, printing and cutting to make bear masks, collages of forest settings.

Understanding the world

Our core text this half term will encourage us to explore different environments and their key features; thinking about where the characters live and the settings for the stories. Our continuous provision will allow the children to investigate the Seasons and different occupations. Through role play the children can reenact scenarios at home.
