Medieval Market

1. Individual activity:

  • You are going to watch a video to get the idea about how life was during the middle ages. In the video you can see the type of products you could buy in the medieval markets and the different jobs you could find there.

While you watch the video you have to think of three differences between the medieval markets and the markets at the present time. Take some notes while you are watching the video and write a short composition at the end.

2. Team work

You have to find a map or a list of ten streets in Barcelona with names related to medieval Unions (Gremis).

Translate the names of the Unions or find the best name for the job related to each Union. Once you have the names make a definition of the job and explain what was each job about.

When we go to Barcelona you will have to find the streets and take photos of yourselves with the names of the streets.

3. Team work

When we go to Barcelona you will have to do some interviews in English with people you will find in the streets. You have to prepare the questions with the other members of the group and when we go to Barcelona each person will have to make at least two interviews. The interviews must help you to prepare your medieval market.

Parts of the interview:

  • Introduce yourself and explain your project.
  • Ask the tourist if they allow you to record them while you are asking them the questions.
  • You will make the questions in the middle of the Gothic district and you have to use the situation to make the tourist imagine the life in the middle ages. Ask them about the life in those streets, about what people used to eat, about the smells they could imagine, about the way people used to dress....
  • Thank the tourists for their help and say goodbye.

At the end of the activity you will have to send the teacher the questions and the answers of the tourists written and the recordings.

4. Team work

For the street market we will prepare in Moià you will have to prepare a game using the names of medieval jobs and the definitions you have written in the second activity. You will have to design some kind of bullseye with the names of the jobs and some pictures. People will have to match the picture and the definition throwing an object to the bullseye and hitting the right picture.

Next to the game we will have a small exhibition with posters explaining the process you will have followed to make the products you sell in the market. You will have to explain the process using three or four steps. Each step will have an explanation in English and a drawing.
