The District Behavior Specialist is a resource to any teacher for addressing behavior concerns for any student in any classroom. The Behavior Specialist can conduct informal classroom observations, which may provide recommendations of easily applied interventions that may improve the behavior without the need for more intensive intervention or assessment. Social skills that have been identified as essential for academic success include:
getting along with others (parents, teachers, and peers)
following directions
identifying and regulating one’s emotions and behaviors
thinking of appropriate solutions to conflict
persisting on task
engaging in social conversation and cooperative play
correctly interpreting the behavior and emotions of others
feeling good about oneself and others
Texas Behavior Support Initiative (TBSI)
The Texas Behavior Support Initiative (TBSI) is a state-level training that meets the requirements mandated by Texas Education Code 37.0021 and Texas Administrative Code 89.1053. TBSI provides foundational knowledge for the use of positive behavior interventions and supports for all students, including students with disabilities. While the TBSI training meets legislative requirements related to procedures for the use of restraint and time-out, it also provides a framework for sharing a wide range of foundational-level behavior strategies and prevention-based schoolwide, classroom, and individual interventions.
