Students from KV Andrews Ganj visited the Mathura Road campus in the morning half. They were introduced to the upcoming IISF 2023 that would be held in Jan 2024. They were introduced to genomics and use of model organisms in genomics research. The students heard about the research happening at the institute for the treatment of Sickle Cell Disease using CRISPR Cas9 along with sensitizing them towards the existing stigma due to Sickle Cell Disease in the tribal populations of Chhattisgarh and other regions of the country.
In the afternoon half, students from Sunshine Society - NGO for children & senior citizens visited the Mathura Road campus. They performed hands-on activities like DNA isolation from daab and making brain caps along with learning about genomics and the human brain.
Science Ambassadors and the outreach team visited Bijnor, UP to interact with 350+ schools students (classes VII - XIIth) and conducted the DNA isolation (Lab@Home kits) activity.
Over 1300+ students from 10 different schools and 5 different colleges in Delhi NCR, Meerut, UP and Rajasthan visited the Mall Road & Mathura Road campus and witnessed the various aspects of genomics research that happens at IGIB. This mega gala included live demos, games, quizzes, and a treasure hunt along with a tour of the institute.
As part of the annual JBNSTS Talent Enrichment Program, each year a batch of selected undergraduate students in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, are taken to a city in India to visit important science institutes and establishments and interact with eminent scientists. This year, the JBNSTS scholars visited New Delhi, with a group of 35 to 40 students.
The dates of the visit were from August 23 to 29, 2023 and it was an institutional collaboration between JBNSTS and IGIB called as the 'JBNSTS-IGIB Talent Enrichment Program for Student Scientists'.
10 students from Alhocon Public school visited Dr. Rajesh Pandey's lab and genomic facility at Mall Road campus on 25th August 2023.
As part of the continued engagement with Rabea Girls' Public School in Chandni Chowk, a three day bioinformatics workshop was organized for IX - XI class students of Rabea School and Zeenat Mahal School from 24th to 26th May 2023. Dr. Jitendra Narayan and Dr. Kumardeep Chaudhary and their lab members conducted the workshop introducing Raspberry Pi and coding for genomics to the students.
Vision of the Blind Lady is a docufiction created to raise awareness of genetic diagnostic for glaucoma, an eye disease affecting 100 million people globally. The movie was screened at National Science Center, Delhi on 9th May and at IGIB on 11th May 2023.
This story is based on an actual project carried out during 2001-2003 at the CSIR-Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata. Prof. Kunal Ray was the principal investigator of the study, and the main work was led by Dr. Arijit Mukhopadhyay, former scientist at IGIB.
Hands-on activity (with Lab@Home kits) to introduce the world of genetics was organized at Rabea Girls’ Public School, Chandni Chowk (on the school’s community day), where students from 6 different schools were present.
Open Day at Mathura Road was organized on 4th May 2023 in which 250 students from 6 different schools visited the campus.
On the occasion of Earth Day (22nd April 2023), our research scholars worked with school hundreds of school students at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the Climate Clock Assembly and Display Event that was organized by Energy Swaraj Foundation.
On the occasion of International Day for Women and Girls in Science, CSIR-HRDG invited the outreach team to interact with students from Rabea Girls Public School. The enthusiastic students isolated DNA from their saliva using the Lab@Home kits.
On 6th February, 30 students from the Zoology Department, University of Delhi visited the Mall Road campus. The visit was organized by Dr. Rajesh Pandey's lab, which included a visit to the NGS facility and a talk by Dr. Pandey.
On 9th February, 45 students from DPG Degree College visited the Mathura Road campus.
Undergraduate students from St. Edmund's College, Shillong visited the Mathura Road campus on 18th January 2023.
In collaboration with the Center for Writing and Communication, Ashoka University, and Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi, a science communication workshop was organized for undergraduates of Deshbandhu College on 31st January 2023.

Students from DAV Public School, Gurgaon and Nirmal Bhartia School visited Mathura Road campus on 3rd November 2022.
Students from Miranda House, University of Delhi visited Mall Road campus on 10th November 2022.
The outreach team and science ambassadors visited Jawahar Noavodya Vidyalaya in Champawat, Uttarakhand. Interacting with students of IX-XII standard was enriching for not just the students but also our team. Dr. Jitendra Narayan who had accompanied the team talked about computational biology which sparked an interest in coding and learning computer science.
In collaboration with KAMP (an initiative of CSIR-NIScPr and M/S Nysa Communications Pvt Ltd), an open day was organized for 85 students that visited our Mathura Road campus from various schools across the country. They got to tour the institute along with our science ambassadors visiting various facilities, and performing hands-on activity followed by an interactive session with Dr. Beena Pillai.
Our outreach team visited CSIR-CCMB on their open day with Lab@Home kits. The curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm of the kids and parents were infectious.
We visited Hanuman Singh Patel Inter College, Patehara (Mirzapur, UP) on 15th July and interacted with 500 students of classed IX - XII. On 29th August, we visited Rao Nihal Singh School, Darauli (Rewari, Haryana) and interacted with 250 students of classes IX - XII.
The students isolated their own DNA with the Lab@Home kits, looking at wonder with the tiny clouds floating in the tubes in their hands and that led to initiation of a dialogue between them and the world of genetics as seen via the eyes of scientists.
18 students from Yuvaraja's College, Mysore visited the Mall Road campus on 21st June. They visited the various facilities and interacted Dr. Swarnendu Bagh.
30 students from Hindu College, University of Delhi visited Mall Road campus on 28th June. They visited the sequencing facility and interacted with Dr. Rajesh Pandey and his lab.
On 19th April, students from Hansraj College visited the Mall Road campus.
On 22nd April, students from Daulat Ram College and Shaheed Rajguru College for Applied Sciences for Women visited the Mathura Road campus.
On 23rd March, we organized an Open Day for 45 students of classes IX - XII from Greater Noida World School at the Mathura Road campus. They visited the various facilities of the institute and performed hands-on DNA isolation. The tour was followed by the periodic table quiz.
On 24th March, we organized Lab@Home session and a virtual tour of the Mall Road campus. 60 school students from various schools (KV Dwarka, Greater Noida World School, Bluebells International, Caramel Convent, Chanakyapuri, and SKV Janakpuri) attended the session online. Along with the mouse behavior lab they got to see a live demonstration and performed DNA isolation from fruits from their homes. Two of the students, Archisha and Anushree from Caramel Convent sent us the images of their home isolation process and won 'Surely, you are joking Mr. Feynman' and 'Uncle Tungsten'.
54 college students along with 6 teachers from SSV College Hapur, UP visited the Mathura Road campus on 28th Feb 2022 on the occasion of National Science Day. Dr. Kumardeep Chaudhary, Senior Scientist at IGIB, introduced the students to big data analytics in biological sciences. The idea competition saw students coming up solutions for diabetics, dialysis and early prediction of diseases by data analysis. Ekta Tomar, Aayushi Sharma, Nidhi Sharma, and Mritunjai Kaushik won the prize books, which were mailed to their college via Amazon.
This interactive session was followed by the tour of the institute, wherein the students visited the zebrafish facility, TEM, and the central instrumentation facility of IGIB.
This hands-on session was organized in collaboration with Prayogshala on 14th December 2021. We talked about DNA and genes in the green lawns of Lodi Gardens with young minds. It was an experience that transposed us all to the 15th century, when nothing was known about DNA. The questions that intrigued these enthusiastic kids are the same that fueled research in the past and brought us to a place today where we could perform isolation of DNA and talk about how it transmits traits from parents to offspring.
Teachers’ training workshop for class XI-XII Biology/Biotechnology teachers was organized from 4th – 7th March 2020 (4 days) at CSIR IGIB, Mathura Road campus. The aim of this workshop was to impart hands-on training in various molecular biology and biotechnology techniques that are part of Biology / Biotechnology curriculum of class XI-XII.
Students from Deshbandhu College (University of Delhi) visited our facilities, interacted with Dr. Sheetal Gandotra and our spirited student volunteers to learn about the advances in genomics research.

Over 500 KV school students were hosted by institute for lab visits, fun activities and inspiring interactive sessions with young researchers and scientists, as part of CSIR Jigyasa initiative.
IGIB has been hosting school and college students along with their teachers in the annual OPEN DAYS, which were held once a year since more than a decade now. Students get to do fun DIY activities like creating glowing tubes and lego gene models, peering through the microscopic world, and some crystal gazing, along with getting to interact with passionate scientists and enthusiastic young researchers of the institute.
