The Spiral Staircase Of All Life
- Of DNA, Evolution and Genetics
At the beginning there was nothing
Then there came the primordial soup, bubbling
Lightning crackled and heat struck a spell on Earth
From nothingness, a nightingale crooning three letter chords arose
Forging the future of life’s birth.
Watson, Crick and Franklin shined the light
On the perfect poetry of biochemistry’s byte
Two strands twisting and twining like grapevine
Waltzing in pairs, running across the bloodline:
The biological scripture, the scaffolding of life.
In the spiral treads of her architecture
The bricks of A, C, G, T assemble their forces
Transcribing life, for immortality.
Tailoring traits, embroidered with error
Bettering breeds with the alchemy of alterations
Insert one letter and your blood has lesser heme
Miss one and the frames shift: your lungs scream
Substitute one and your blood turns sick with sickles
Silent changes can put an end to your tall dream
Sunshine, Radiation, Tobacco and Chemicals can invite the Emperor of Maladies.
Damage control occurs down the stream
Copy, Paste, Translate
Repair, Join, Recombine
Run a spell check on the scaffolds at every step.
A random series of letters persevering for the very idea of life
Patterns drift across Darwin’s finches
Nature selects giraffes of necks of longer inches
Viruses - replicating, mutating, thriving
Humans labouring, Travelling far and wide
In a quest to find their perfect mate.
The tiniest breathing bleb
Creatures that grow only in lab media,
Pines that have stood tall for millennia,
Slimy serpents, Birds that hum:
All bequeathed with the same coiling helix of life, infinitum.
This short poem touches upon the basic structure of life: DNA, mutations and genetic diseases (Thalassemia, Cystic Fibrosis, Sickle Cell Anemia, Laron Dwarfism, Cancer), the DNA repair mechanisms, the forces driving evolution (genetic drift, natural selection, mutations, mating, gene flow).

The Tale of the Gene
Some say ‘I’ travelled from a world so far,
To some ‘I’ was dwelling in a laboratory jar.
Few saw my molecular birth, with a spark, reduction and mirth
Others anticipated my mysterious arrival on the Earth!
‘I’ am the ‘gene’, and
This is an abridged tale of my life.
In a bubbling soup of oceanic churns,
It seems that the proteins are enjoying their turn.
A dream long lived, rushing into a world of big,
‘I’ was yet to be born, with RNA wearing the crown.
With years and years passing by,
‘I’ am offering my life-services, thy.
Waking up to a morning,
Held in some twists and turns.
Finding myself bound in a structure stronger than before,
The deoxyribonucleic acid it seems it is called.
For once upon a time, ‘I’ had water all around,
To my surprise, I have forced myself above the ground.
‘I’ observe as ‘I’ lay unnoticed for thousands of years,
Developing into forms that were never there.
How ‘I’ spread was a fascinating mystery,
Till a monk worked out my history.
Shuffling the wisdom through violet and white,
He named me ‘factors’ at that time.
The mystery now gradually unfolds,
For now ‘I’ became the biologist’s gold.
She caught me jumping, and called me transposons,
Some saw me moving on my transport of chromosomes.
‘I’ was still a covet, hiding the secrets of life,
Till the time Franklin, Watson and Crick arrived.
They looked me well, up and down,
Developed a ‘Central Dogma’ keeping me around.
For you know, my nature to keep life-functioning at stake,
What made me so powerful was a mistake.
‘I’ can grant a new feature of my choice,
This is the reason I come in your genome, twice.
For what ‘I’ have given away in the form of brilliant molecules,
You have used them on me for your own good.
Some broke me and tore me apart,
To understand me better,
Find it, move it, lose it was their art.
‘I’ was given a new look,
With molecular scissors trimming me in every nook.
‘I’ was tailored, engineered and ‘I’ was probed,
‘I’ was released in the market with an updated role.
The man may think he knows me well,
Yet there’s so much to venture into how ‘I’ dwell.
‘I’ am the gene that lies behind the nature that you see,
The bacteria, animals and the tree.
‘I’ am strong, yet so fragile,
‘I’ am always on an evolutionary ride.
The discoveries related to me shall never end,
But bidding adieu for the time!

GENETICS: THE MYSTERIOUS GAMBLE
How happy was the day,
I breathed fresh air
Dad and mom
Brother and sister merry-making around!
But one day suddenly the world halted
At the sight of myself in the mirror!
Brother shouted “You are adopted”
Sister fantasized “You are a unicorn”
Mother mislead “You are Adonis, the epitome of desirability”
Father explained “You are an albino”.
Neither are you adopted nor are you superhuman,
this is an outcome of a mysterious gamble.
Nature makes you special, mama’s boy,
from whom you received the carrier gene.
Whether black or white remember my dear,
You are selected by nature lawfully through
a miracle called recombination.
Recombination, the big bang of diversity!
Through which the nature seers
Selects and rejects without any bias
But acknowledges and empowers every variant to survive and propagate
Building history with different narratives.
So, my child live happy
Not fearing of change
As change alone is the existential truth
Love yourself however you are
As love alone is the divine truth.

Title: “DNA: a birthday speech!!!”
Today am too glad standing before you
Though I am in a twist & turn topology!!
Told to say four words on this occasion
For me it’s just A T G & C
Yet am gonna take a little more of your time
I request all to stop your respective tasks at hand
I thank x-ray studies for making me known
Giving me an individuality that was anciently sown!!
I never knew I had a family
A distinct one the RNA
And the protein siblings!!
All related in some or other way!
The human race hasn’t face to face met!!
Yet so much respect and research to me dedicate
I am touched, really touched
And many a times edited, mutated and cut!!
We are wearing genes, good the bad and the unknown
Some hereditary, some new to the story!
They have given me religions
Codon, anticodon, antisense and many
One thing I observe and appreciate
Never will be my birthday a dry-day
In-fact the alcohol is what elevates
The security that keeps us safe!!
Every single visitor I have
Come’s with visa, stating autoclaved!
Every move each way I behave
Makes sense to them for me am amazed!
X-ray crystallography, gel-bands and studies
Promise to have seen us
Not cursed by society
Yet I live a disguise!!
I am a friend and a foe,
Viral n enemy sometimes though
But living within our DNA race
Good to each other in own ways!
‘Ok ok let’s make a drink for all
Make sure each one’s glass full’
Serve them Polymerase, Transcriptase et al
Anything they ask for!!
Keep the dnase, rnase out of reach
We wanna replicate and teach
On this day we earned freedom from non-existence
And we got a role to maintain homeostasis
Between a medication and target site!!!
Between the human and their life

Floating calmly over the phenotype ocean
Mendel fishes out genes one-by-one
The night is so dark, the ocean fathomless

'Stay Green'
What does a bunch of random colours have to do with Gregor Mendel??
The colour of pea seeds (cotyledons) was one of the seven characters studied by Gregor Mendel. His experiments with green and yellow peas have provided valuable insights into dominant and recessive traits. We now know that the “stay-green” gene (sgr) is responsible for this character, and that it codes for the STAY-GREEN protein, which is involved in chlorophyll degradation. Therefore, the wild-type gene yields yellow peas, and a mutation in this gene causes peas to remain green.
This abstract art celebrates Mendel’s invaluable contributions to genetics by presenting the amino acid sequence of the ‘stay-green’ protein through an artistic lens. The yellow-green scheme alludes to the colour of the peas in Mendel’s experiments. Further, since yellow colour in pea seeds is the dominant trait and green colour is recessive, the ‘dominant’ amino acids in this protein were assigned yellow shades, and the other amino acids were assigned green hues. Not so random after all, is it? ☺
