The 17th IGEL Conference goes online (June 23-26, 2021)

The Rationale for going online:

It has become increasingly clear that the traditional face-to-face conference (already postponed from 2020) will not be viable during 2021. It is unknown what responses to COVID-19 will remain in place in the UK, how restrictions elsewhere will affect conference travel, etc. Therefore, the IGEL Board has concluded that it would not only be risky to plan for a face-to-face conference during 23-26 June 2021, but also that it would be irresponsible to do so during international attempts to come to terms with the pandemic.

The Plan for going online:

Despite these circumstances, the Board is eager to provide a forum for empirical studies of literature and to ensure that the many high-quality papers submitted during conference organization will be shared with the community. Therefore, we are pleased to announce that the 17th IGEL conference will be a virtual conference (via Zoom) taking place 23-26 June 2021 (the same dates as initially planned).

The training school will now take place, 17-18 June 2021, also online. This will be an opportunity to share your research and to network with colleagues in a virtual space, rather than in the usual physical space.

We follow other academic conferences that have opted for a virtual alternative, although this is still new territory for most of academia and there will likely be some challenges. Nevertheless, we believe it is the best option at this stage, and we will strive to make it work.

Conference Fees:

One benefit of a virtual conference is that it reduces many of the costs required by a face-to-face format. Thus, the cost for attending IGEL 2021 will be lower than originally expected for the physical conference.

The conference fees, reduced in light of the move to a virtual platform, nonetheless reflect the costs and human resources required to facilitate online discussion and (formal and informal) exchange within the IGEL community, as well the creation of a repository of resources arising from the conference to be housed on the IGEL website.

Deadline for registration is May 31, 2021 (the Early Bird Deadline is April 30, 2021).

Please confirm proposals that were accepted earlier:

We ask that delegates whose proposals were accepted in March 2020 to indicate their continued interest in presenting their work in this revised venue. Send confirmation to the conference organizers (IGEL2020@liverpool.ac.uk) no later than 31 January 2021.

The pre-conference training school (on sentiment analysis) will be held on 17-18 June 2021, but also online. We ask colleagues who signed up for the training school to send confirmation of their commitment to the conference organizers (IGEL2020@liverpool.ac.uk).

We welcome new proposals:

We encourage those who wish to propose presentations for 2021 that were not among those accepted in March 2020 to submit their proposals (IGEL2020@liverpool.ac.uk) by 31 January 2021.
