Agenda
Pre-Work
For your pre-work, please complete the following:
Please read "The cask of Amontillado." Once you've finished reading, please compose two quick writes in response to the following:
What do you learn about Montresor and Fortunato?
What do you learn about what is going on between the two men?
Please read or skim "The tell-tale heart." While we will not be working directly with this text, it will provide context for a shared sample we will work with.
OPTIONAL: We will be working with student writing samples, and it may be easier to work with them if you have printed copies. The samples are linked below, please print them if you feel it will make working with the samples easier.
"The Cask of Amontillado"
During our meeting we will be learning a process for studying student writing and planning follow-up instruction based on what we notice about students' work. The student writing for our work comes from the 7th grade Amplify unit D, Poetry and Poe. In order to study the students' writing, we need to first engage with the text. Please read Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado." Once you've read the text, please respond to the following:
In "The Cask of Amontillado," Poe tells the story of Montresor and his desire for revenge. Please compose two quick writes in response to the following:
What do you learn about Montresor and Fortunato?
What do you learn about what is going on between the two men?
Please have your quick write somewhere you can access it during our meeting. You'll be sharing your response with a partner.
"The Tell-Tale Heart"
Please read or skim "The Tell-Tale Heart." We won't be working directly with the text, but it will give context to the sample student response that we will work with.
Student Work Samples
We will be working with the below student samples during our session. If possible, please print out each sample prior to our meeting. It will simplify the process of studying the students' writing.
Sample A
Sample B
Sample C
Sample D
Sample E
Sample F
Materials for Our Work Together in Session from 6:00 to 8:00
Give it a go: Revision
Working with your partner, please work with either the second or third paragraph in the sample response. Your job is to do two things:
Revise the paragraph you selected to make it more effective and post your revision.
Explain how your revision improves the content of the response.

Bridge to Practice
Our final NSI meeting will be used to reflect on this year’s instruction, including students’ experiences. The purpose of this bridge to practice is for you to deepen your understanding of the experiences that students are having in their ELAR classroom. You'll use this
information in our May meeting to inform some of your reflection. To be successful with this bridge to practice, please do the following:
Please use the Empathy Interview protocol linked below to interview 1 or 2 students. Please take notes on the conversations that you have. Here are a few tips for collecting your interviews:
If possible, record the interview. This will help to fill in information you may have missed.
Take notes to supplement the recorded interview. You may want to mark specific times you want to listen to on the recording or big ideas that you don’t want to forget.
Summarize the interview in your own words as soon as possible after the interview. This will help document your thinking about what was said and what you observed during the interview.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
