Internalizing, Adapting, and Condensing: An Example from Garcia

This is the original lesson 1 for "Sucker" from unit 7B, sub-unit 1.

The linked document shows one way to condense the task and add in student centered routines. This is not a student-facing task sheet, but can be adapted to be student facing.

"Sucker" by Carson McCullers

The linked teacher-facing text has been segmented to include stopping points and text-based questions. The questions are meant to be asked at the end of the segments and are meant to help students process the segment just read develop a coherent understanding of the whole text.

Student-Centered Routines

Bridge to Practice

The purpose of this bridge to practice is for you to begin to incorporate a student-centered routine into an Amplify lesson, condense a lesson, or do both.

To complete this bridge to practice, please do the following:

  • Begin by selecting a lesson from your grade-level Unit C, sub-unit 1.

  • Work to understand and begin to internalize the unit, sub-unit 1, and the lesson you've selected. Make sure to understand the goals of the unit, what students will have to complete for the unit assessments, how the sub-unit supports students in working towards the learning goals, and how the lesson you've selected supports students to understand the text, to work towards the goals of the unit, and to be successful on the unit assessments .

  • Once you've internalized the lesson that you'll be working with, you'll want to make some decisions about where you'd like to

          1. add a student-centered routine to help deepen students' understanding of the text and the work in the lesson, OR

          2. condense the lesson to, for example, eliminate repetition, OR

          3. condense the lesson and add in student-centered routines.

During our next meeting, you'll be working to share your adapted lesson with grade-level colleagues. Please make sure you have a document to share - this could be a google doc, some slides - whatever you are most comfortable sharing.

You may work with other grade-level teachers at your school to create a shared adapted lesson.

Please let us know if you have any questions!
