PROJECT

The project Sustainable Diets faces the crucial challenge of healthy nutrition from a new perspective. In the project students can link the compulsory topic of nutrition with sustainability and global warming . To reach more students and their families, the project links this project with emotions, through an art approach.

The project Sustainable Diets (SUSDI) is based on an analysis of needs of the participating schools on the basis of their results on Science and Maths obtained in international assessments (PISA, TIMMS) by their countries, and the recommendations of actions to take for schools with low students achievements (PISA, 2016) , and linked to current economical crisis in EU and FAO recommendations on food consumption. Two of the schools belong to countries (Slovakia, Spain) that have low results in science , one to a country(Austria) which students have high results and the fourth school from Portugal belongs to a country which has improved significantly in the last PISA assessment. PISA studies (2016) point that schools that implement extra science activities improve their science results. This is in concordance with the fact that the school from Portugal started to implement National and International Science Projects in the last years. SUSDI aims to contribute to empower young people and their ability to participate actively in society, and to allowing them to play an active role in society and achieve personal fulfilment.

The main target group of the project is secondary school students. Other groups involved are families, teachers and local associations

It should be funded because it faces an old challenge from a new perspective and because the project team is of high quality: the teachers that lead SUSDI at their organisations are highly experienced in Inquiry Based Science Education, this is a methodology highly recommended in Science Education. Partners have initiated local actions in order to improve students achievements, specially in Science . Although three of the schools (INS Sabadell, BG/BRG Biodekgasse Baden and Gymnazium Jana Chalupku) have not experience in Erasmus projects in the last three years, the local leaders of the project do have previous experiences in European Projects, and the experienced school from Portugal (Agrupamento de Escolas Trigal de Santa Maria) is highly experienced and can be an excellent guide.
