Gymnázium Jána Chalupku v Brezne (Grammar School of Jan Chalupka in Brezno)(ESLOVÀQUIA)

Our school is locarted in a small town called Brezno, situated inthe central part of Slovakia. It is a Secondary Grammar school inJan Chalupka. We have 320 students and 23 teachers. The main features and levels of education are: - study of general knowledge ( 4 and 8-year study), students from 11 to 19 years old - school educational programme focusing on key competencies of students in foreign languages and science, ICT - school graduates are studying at various univesities , and many of them have become successful scientists, doctors, teachers, managers in top companies - school educational programme at GJCH supports science, computer studies and foriegn languages - in Slovakia, there is a two-level school programme of education, which gives schools the opportunity to create their own school educational programme, based on State educational programme - the school can use the optional lessons to support some subjects, or to create new subjects, seminars or lessons focusing on practical tasks in laboratories , according to school staff and students ´demands In the lessons, we have been working on the research project focusing on water in the local river Hron, as a cultural heritage. The objective of the project is to raise the issue of sustainable development with an emphasis on three attributes -environmental , economic and social contributions. It has been studied through related activities (analysis of the quality, literary workshps to raise the social awareness, water as a source of life). We have cooperated with the University of Matej Bell in Banska Bystrica on implementation of Inquiry Based Science Education and the implementation of innovative technologies. The school's motivation to join SUSDI project are (1) to improve Science and language competency of students, (2) to potentiate the creativity and enterpreneurship of students through the desing and implementation of projects of sustainable development, (3) to provide opportunities to practice cooperative working both at national and international levels, (4) to contribute to find resources to fight against unemployment, to raise the awareness of students to study science at universities since most students study humanities and after they graduate, they have difficulties to find a job, (5) To develop critical thinking of young , to support problem solving of everyday life and to support the involvement of students in global issues. and (6) To emphasise the importance of foreign languages The key people of the project are Jana Chlebusova , a teacher of Chemistry and Maths, who has been in charge of all running projects focusing on science and Lubica.Pavliakova , a teacher of English , dealing with the language issues , since the project is international.
