We believe schools are a place for students to experience engagement, empowerment, and efficacy! The goal of all schools should be to raise up an efficacious group of individuals in our society.
Daniel Pink, in his book Drive, presents that human beings are driven by a sense of purpose, a path to mastery, and autonomy. That speaks to the need to empower youngsters to take charge of their own learning. (See Dr. Sulla's books on Students Taking Charge.)
Empowerment in the classroom is accomplished through student choice and voice in instructional activities to meet their needs. (Click the image to access downloadable PDF files.)

A popular structure among teachers is our Great Remote/Hybrid Learner Rubric — a rubric of expectations for engaging in learning from the standpoint of work habits, behaviors, SEL, and executive function. We work with teachers to design these rubrics for their classrooms; we work with schools to design grade-level rubrics to implement schoolwide. Examples (click to access the downloadable Word file for editing and use):
Engage and empower students by providing them with instructional activities that match their learning styles and cognitive levels; teach them to make choices as to how they will learn, when they will learn (allowing them to order their activities), and with whom they will learn, as opportunities are available for pairs and group work. We've developed a free site for teachers: ddal.idecorp.com. Below are a few samples:
Remote workshops on all aspects of student empowerment
Virtual Support Center (VSC) providing synchronous and asynchronous support to teachers across the school year; see demo site at vsc.idecorp.com
Virtual Learning Community (VLC) on topics related to empowerment — an online course in which teachers have flexibility over when they engage while still having access to consultants to help them in designing materials for their classrooms; VLCs for empowerment include:
"Fostering Student Empowerment Through Structures"
"Designing Differentiated Digital Activity Lists"
"PBL Implementation: Next Steps in Student-Centered, Authentic Learning Unit Design"
