Background Information

Comparing the culture and living conditions of small and large cities can be interesting. Wales has six cities and each one has a colourful history. What are their geographical and human characteristics? What was the reason for their development?

St Davids differs from the others in size and reason for its existence. The remains of the pilgrims and their journey to St Davids can still be seen throughout the Pembrokeshire landscape. Many others developed as ports serving the heavy industries. Ports are commonly homes for people of multiple cultures. Learning about the cities of Wales offers an opportunity to discuss different languages and religions, fairness and respect.

People in Pembrokeshire have traveled to world cities and left their influence for centuries. Gerald of Wales, born in Manorbier around 1146, persuaded the people of Wales to travel to the far ends of the earth on the Crusades. Hari Tudur was born in Pembroke in 1457. Before the end of 1485, he was king in London where he founded the Tudor monarchy. From St Davids, Thomas Tomkins (1572 - 1656) went to Worcester and London to compose music for kings. Thomas Rees (1844-1921) traveled from Lydstep to travel abroad. He became a flourishing builder and Mayor of the city of Brisbane in Australia. His work is still highly regarded today.

Trade with the world was Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones's field which sold flannel, from Newtown, Powys, to the USA, Europe and Australia. The architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) made his mark in the United States. His family were also Welsh, and he is remembered throughout the world for the transformation of building methods. He is America's best known architect.
