Background Information
The importance of health and well-being is central to our lives. The skills of the NHS staff and the scientists who support them are valued more now than ever. But our efforts to improve health and live fulfilled lives have a long history. There are, in Pembrokeshire, interesting healing wells and myths around them e.g. Teilo's Well at Maeclochog, Non's Well at St Davids, The Three Fountains at Gumfreston, the 'capan well' Llanllawer near Llanychaer, Govan's Well near Bosherston, Edren's Well near Letterston, Pistyll Meigan, Eglwyswrw, Higan's Well near Haverfordwest - it's an interesting list! The learning can be extended by taking a virtual tour to a healing fountain in North Wales - St Winefride's Well in Holywell, Clwyd.
Frances Morgan Hoggan, from Brecon, became the first woman in Wales to train as a doctor. Her father was from Pembrokeshire. Frances studied in Zurich, Paris and Dusseldorf. He traveled to lecture in the USA. She became the second woman in Europe to receive a degree in medicine, completing six-year degree studies in half the time. She was multilingual. She is remembered as one of Wales' 100 most influential women.
Betsi Cadwaladr, who worked as a nurse, abroad, during Florence Nightingale's time, is also among the 100 Welsh women. Work on the history of the Welsh Blood Service and the role of the Red Cross in Wales offers rich learning opportunities. Discussing the service of your local GP practice and Withybush and South Pembrokeshire Hospitals can tell you about Aneurin Bevan's huge role as the founder of the NHS.
The history of the use of health-beneficial (and toxic!) plants can be discussed. Doctors of Myddfai have been known for creating home remedies. 'Manina Ointment' made in Fishguard, was a well-known product a century ago, when mixing home remedies was still common. Although the times have changed, daffodils are commonly grown here today, and a source of galanthamine for a modern alzheimer's treatment drug.
From the East comes wellbeing and health habits that are fun for pupils to learn about. Many 'yoga' resources through the medium of Welsh are now available. It is important for pupils to see the value of keeping fit and being creative, to ensure mental health.
