DON'T FORGET TO BRING IN YOUR USED BATTERIES! π
But why? We take part in the Wales school battery recycling competition to help stop used batteries ending up in landfill instead of being recycled. Batteries contain valuable materials that can be used again and again, so every battery we collect means less need to dig up new raw materials from the earth β helping to look after our planet! π
The impact we can have really adds up: in 2024-25, schools across Newport collected 600kg of batteries between 36 schools β that's roughly 24,000 batteries stopped from going to landfill! By joining in, we become part of that bigger effort, and we get to see for ourselves how small actions can add up to something amazing.
So keep bringing in your used batteries β every single one counts, and together we can help build a greener future for Wales!

The ecoβcouncil invited families to donate unwanted clothes, shoes, and accessories for our Share Shack clothes sale. Thanks to the generous contributions, many items found new homes. Any remaining items were collected by Rags2Riches to be reused or recycled, helping us reduce waste and support a more sustainable community:
By recycling and reusing 199.6 kg of clothes instead of throwing them away, our school helped save almost 800 kg of COβ emissions. That's about the same weight as a small car! Every tonne of reused clothing can save around 4 tonnes of COβ compared with needing new products to replace it.

We noticed that there was litter on the floor so we went litter picking and made posters. π― We put the posters on Seesaw and around the school. The amount of litter we found dropped after putting up posters.Β

The whole school joined in with the RSPB's Big School's Birdwatch but the eco-council fed the birds to help them out over winter and encourage them to visit! We also planted some bulbs to encourage wildlife to Forest School. Hopefully we will plant more seeds as the weather warms up!
This year we spotted 28 house sparrows, the highest number ever recorded in our school birdwatch! π¦
2024-2025
In November we joined the #RememberHedgehogs campaign to remind people to check under bonfires for hidden hedgehogs. Bonfire piles look like 5-star hotels to hedgehogs looking for a safe and cosy winter nest to hibernate in β so itβs vital to Stop! Move! Check! and think of wildlife!
2023-2024

140.3 kg of clothing is roughly 470 items of clothing given a new home instead of ending up in landfill. Wow! π€© β»οΈ
Battery Recycling
St. Andrew's Primary is taking part in the Newport Schools battery recycling competition β by sending in your used batteries not only is there a chance the school could win a prize but you would be recycling valuable resources AND helping to reduce the number of batteries disposed of in Newport!
Last year the fantastic efforts of Newport schools and their dedication to recycling ensured a grand total of 1267 kgs of batteries were collected for safe recycling. That weight is equivalent to a small family car! π«¨π
In 2018 St. Andrew's recycled 15 kg and in 2021 we recycled 35 kg!! Can we do even better this time? Yes we can!
2021-2022
Here's our assembly with lots of information about why we have an Eco-Council, what is important to us, what we've been doing and some of our planned actions. These include a Rags2Riches clothes collection, a battery recycling competition, a whole school Ecosia search competition, a school litter pick to compare results from the last litter pick, a litter pick in the wider community, and making sure we are doing as much recycling as we can!
