Background

Bridgend Local Education Authority no longer diagnose dyslexia. At Cynffig, we recognise that pupils with literacy difficulties need specific support, tailored to their individual needs.

Teachers are aware of dyslexia friendly strategies that can support all pupils and not just those with dyslexia.

Dyslexia support at Cynffig

Staff within the ALN department are trained to support pupils through small group interventions, and assisted technology.

We believe that pupils need to be empowered to support themselves through a variety of practical strategies including the use of digital technology.

Pupils will work in small groups with a member of staff and will be shown how to use a variety of apps such as speech to text and text to speech.

They will have help to organise their work and use mind maps to support their revision techniques.

Pupils will have access to the RNIB Book Share programme, which enables pupils to download almost any book in a dyslexia friendly format.

Pupils will have a Nessy online reading and spelling account.

They will be offered additional literacy support once a week.

In year 13, pupils with dyslexia are offered a full dyslexia report in order to support their application for DSA (Disabled Students Allowance) at university.
