Gross Motor Skills

If you are concerned about your child’s motor coordination skills, the ALN department provides an extra -curricular games club called Smart Moves which specialises in developing balance and coordination. Smart Moves is run every week for about 45 minutes. It is a fun, relaxed and safe way to improve your child’s motor skills. Smart Moves is open to other children in the local community. If you are interested, please contact the ALN department to book a place.

Fine Motor Skills

If you are concerned about your child’s fine motor skills e.g. they have difficulty with handwriting, tying laces, using cutlery etc, the ALN department provide a range of equipment and support for these pupils.

  • Pupils have access to angle boards to support their handwriting.

  • They can use a variety of specialised pens, suitable for both left and right handed pupils.

  • Handwriting sessions are offered at the Study Skills room twice a week during Challenge time.

If you feel that your child’s motor skills are having a detrimental impact on their everyday life e.g. they are particularly clumsy, they are unable to hold a pen properly, get dressed independently, unable to tie laces or ride a bike etc, the school can refer to the DCD Pathway for a diagnosis.

Please click on the link below to see the process of referring for a DCD diagnosis.
