Mental Health Resources

Many people feel stress and anxiety in the face of uncertainty, which can also lead to feelings of loneliness and/or depression. It is important to ask for help if these feelings become overwhelming. Below is a list of resources available for mental health services.

NYC Well

If you need access to mental health support outside of school/work hours, you can call 1-888-NYC-WELL or text Well to 65173. https://nycwell.cityofnewyork.us/en/

  • Services include counseling, peer support, referrals to care, assistance in connecting to the referral, and follow-up services. It operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Crisis Text Line

  • Text “Home” to 741741 when you are feeling depressed or suicidal, or in any type of crisis, and a crisis worker will text you back immediately and continue to text with you. Many people don't like talking on the phone and prefer texting. It's a FREE service to anyone- teens and adults- in the US, and it's available 24/7.

Suicide Prevention and Crisis Lifeline

Mobile Crisis Team for Mental Health Crisis - Call 888-692-9355. A mobile crisis team is a group of health professionals, such as nurses, social workers and psychiatrists, who can provide mental health services, primarily in people's homes. There are about two dozen teams in the city, and they are available in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.

Mental Health Support Services

  • Children's Single Point of Access (CSPOA) - centralized referral system for children with serious emotional disturbance who need intensive mental health services to remain at home or in their community. Services include Health Home Care Management, Non-Medicaid Care Coordination, and Community Residence. Call: 347-396-7205.

  • THE LGBT/Gay Center The Center Youth runs a Computer Lab drop-in hour Monday through Friday from 3-4p.m. as well as many weekly support groups, individual counseling and other services for youth ages 13-21. If you are interested in getting more information or would like to set up an intake please contact youth@gaycenter.org or call 646-358-1732.

  • Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center - provides free and confidential health and wellness services to anyone ages 10 to 26 years of age. They are directly linked to the clinic in JREC. Also open for medical care.

  • Family Resource Centers provide individual and group-based family support services to parents/caregivers of children and youth (birth- age 24) who have or are at risk for developing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges, using a family and youth peer model.

  • Family Assessment Program: FAP provides support to families that are struggling with everyday challenges. FAP works to strengthen families, reduce conflict, and connect your family to many services that provide ongoing support in your community. It helps families handle concerns such as a child running away, skipping school, or disruptive behavior, without having to go to court.

Mental Health Referral Service/Information

  • Psychology Today - Anyone who has insurance and wants to find a psychotherapist can go to the Psychology Today's "Find a Therapist" website and do a search. Most if not all therapists are doing phone/video sessions at this time.

  • Headway, a mental health company focused on making quality mental health care more accessible for folks based in New York City. Therapist referral service.

  • Therapy for Black Girls is a fantastic mental health resource. It includes weekly podcasts by Dr. Joyce Harden Bradford, Psychologist in Atlanta, about "all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible version of ourselves".

LGBTQIA+ Support Services

  • Hetrick Martin Institute LGBTQ & Youth provides community, basic needs, health, education, and career services to thousands of LGBTQ youth every year.

  • The LGBTQ Center - provides remote services for support.

  • New Alternatives NYC -Provides meals, clothing, resources, and general assistance and harm reduction for LGBTQ teenagers and young adults

  • The Trevor Project - a place where LGBTQ youth and their allies can find answers to frequently asked questions, and explore resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity and more! Remember, if you need immediate support or help, Trevor’s counselors are just a phone call, chat, or text away. You are not alone.

  • Ali Forney - provides emergency housing and other services.

  • National Center for Transgender Equality ID Documents Center - helps with documents related to gender and name change.
