Catholic Social Services will provide a School Consultation Program which includes the following services:
Counseling children referred by staff & parents. If a student is referred to the counselor, the parent will be notified by the counselor if more than two sessions are recommended;
Group sessions with children in like situations, i.e. divorced parents, newcomers, etc. Children will participate in group sessions only with parental permission;
Brief counseling with parents.
Consultation with teachers, other staff and principal;
In-service sessions for staff;
Parenting sessions;
Classroom sessions on special Christian Mental Health dimensions, i.e. listening;
Dealing with anger, fear, etc.
The School Counselor will be available to the school each day school is in session.
A full time registered nurse manages our school health room. Yearly vision and hearing screenings are performed. You will be notified if the screening shows any concerns.
If a child becomes ill during school hours, the parent will be notified by the nurse’s office. In case the parent cannot be reached, we will notify the person you have authorized or the doctor you specified on the Emergency Contact on the Medical Information form returned on Packet Day. A child will be released to one of the people you have on that form only if we cannot contact either parent by telephone and the child is too ill to remain at school. Students who are ill should remain at home until they are physically fit to resume a normal class day (24 hours fever free or on antibiotics before returning). If a student is absent for 3 or more consecutive days, a doctor’s note is required. A student may remain in the nurse’s office only one day during recess time due to weakness after having returned to school - provided a written request is sent. If a student is unable to participate in physical education, he/she must present a written excuse (signed by a doctor) to the P. E. instructor indicating the time when the student may resume P. E. classes.
If a child is out of school due to illness, they are not allowed to participated in extra-curricular activities on school grounds after hours for the day of illness.
Please note the following: all medicines are to be brought to the nurse’s office in the morning where they will be kept and dispensed. No medicines, aspirin, cough drops, etc., may be kept in the classrooms.
If the medicine has been prescribed, it must be in a pharmacy container which clearly states the child’s name and dosage.
All medicine must be accompanied by written permission from parents allowing the school to dispense the medicine. Permission for long-term medication will be kept on file in the clinic for the school year. No medicine will be dispensed unless both conditions have been met. This is a Kansas State Law. Aspirin, Tylenol, cough syrups, cough drops and other over-the-counter medicines:
Written permission from a parent/guardian allowing the school to dispense over-the-counter medications must be sent to the school nurse.
If your child has a chronic medical condition, (i.e., diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, severe peanut allergy, etc.) that you wish to share with the school / nurse, please feel free to make an appointment with the school nurse to determine the best way to inform and educate the teachers and staff in providing the best possible care for your child while at school.
All of the above conditions must be met in order for the school to dispense over-the-counter medications to your child.
If your child needs to use cough drops or throat lozenges during the school day, please be aware of the following new guidelines:
Written Permission Required: Students must have a note from a parent or guardian giving permission to use cough drops or throat lozenges during school hours. Since this is a new policy it will be added to Sycamore for January’s registration, but until then please send a note.
Safe Storage: For safety reasons, students may not carry cough drops in their pockets or backpacks. Cough drops must be kept in the nurse's office, and administered by the school nurse. The health room will have cough drops for students but a note must be on file for permission to have. If a student needs a specific kind then they may bring to school and given to the nurse to monitor.
Labeling: Please send the cough drops in with your child’s full name clearly labeled.
Age Appropriateness: Be sure that the cough drops are appropriate for your child’s age and do not contain medication that requires a doctor’s authorization.
These steps help us maintain a safe environment and avoid accidental ingestion or sharing among
students. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school nurse or the main office.
