Seating / Environment
Have desks facing towards the front in rows, leave space in between students to minimize distraction but not too much space so students can discuss questions when needed.
During conversation
Encourage students to speak to each other on problems when a new unit is introduced.
When reviewing for a test or quiz, have students work individually to strengthen their own abilities.
Toolbox
Could possibly use popsicle sticks to get students to answer questions when class is silent. This is only used when students are uncomfortable and to strengthen the students’ will to speak.
Have students answer questions on whiteboards and share them with the class.
When lecturing, use multiple whiteboards around the room to write down notes for different sections or concepts of the unit. This keeps students spatially aware and engaged.
Have entrance and exit tickets for class. At the beginning of class, have everyone do a problem related to the unit that will get the class moving. In the end, have a question related to the material learned in that class to review and help students learn more. This will help students create a routine which therefore leads to more comfortability when entering the class.
