Seating / Environment

• Have desks in pairs all facing toward the front at different angles. The teacher sits in the front middle facing the students.

• If the class is discussion-heavy, then place the desks in a circle. This fosters interaction between students.

During conversation

• When students are discussing among themselves, teachers should pull themselves away from the conversation and observe.

• If it is quiet, have some questions for students to brainstorm and start conversation.

• If one student is speaking constantly, use their ideas to start a new conversation among the other students.

Toolbox

• Make sure to match the tone of voice to the classroom environment. If the students are energetic and willing to share ideas, keep a louder tone of voice. If the students are shy or writing, keep a lower tone of voice. If the students are uncomfortable, keep an encouraging tone of voice, etc.

• When doing artistic or writing-intensive work, give students a choice between the two. This will show their greatest strengths and make them feel more comfortable doing their work.
