Seating / Environment
Have desks in pairs all facing toward the front at different angles. The teacher sits in the front middle facing the students.
If the class is discussion-heavy, then place the desks in a circle. This fosters interaction between students.
During conversation
When students are discussing among themselves, teachers should pull themselves away from the conversation and observe.
If it is quiet, have some questions for students to brainstorm and start conversation.
If one student is speaking constantly, use their ideas to start a new conversation among the other students.
Toolbox
Make sure to match the tone of voice to the classroom environment. If the students are energetic and willing to share ideas, keep a louder tone of voice. If the students are shy or writing, keep a lower tone of voice. If the students are uncomfortable, keep an encouraging tone of voice, etc.
When doing artistic or writing-intensive work, give students a choice between the two. This will show their greatest strengths and make them feel more comfortable doing their work.
