FOCUS STUDY

Printmaking

This focus project will combine previous skills learnt in Shape.

Process - creating your plate.

  1. Select a portrait [either self or other] to model your design on Perhaps you could use your Nga Atua from your cut paper piece!

  2. Look at the face and the types of shapes that you can see that make up the face [think about what you did for your Notan]

  3. Cut these shapes out of thin card [cereal box] and arrange them on a thicker card "plate" in an interesting composition to build up your face. Use layers in your work to create 3 levels of card [refer to first image below]

  4. Consider using some Traditional Pattern shapes or shapes from your Cut paper piece in the background of your work, think about cropping, focal point and rotation and repetition. You can add lines and details with a biro pen or skewer [refer to third image below]

  5. You can add extra texture with corrugated card, string, hot glue etc

  6. Glue shapes down thoroughly and allow to dry

  7. Coat your printing plate on both sides with Shellac to seal it.

  8. Roll a thin layer of Ink over your plate when dry and print onto your paper.
