Students are each challenged to improve their community on a budget of $10. There are only two rules:
They cannot add their own money or property to the $10 provided for the project.
They couldn't do anything illegal.
Students write formal proposals for approval before receiving the cash. They are responsible for tracking their spending (and profits when they choose to leverage their money) in digital spreadsheets (see examples of some student spreadsheets here). As they progress, they write speeches to explain their choices and actions. They have opportunities to write multiple drafts of their speeches and practice delivering them.
The speeches are delivered at a public exhibition to a panel of influential community members. Offices of panel members who have attended these events include the superintendent, the head principal, the city manager, members of the city council, the school board chair, the vice mayor, and the city mayor. Panel members scored their performances.
After speeches are delivered, audience and panel members meet with students individually to discuss their work.
