Music

Each course in the music program is designed to develop skills, understanding, and musicality at the highest possible level. Inherent in the musical experience is a simultaneious combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning, as well as the emotional connection to the art form. Additionally, the process of musical study enhances the development of creative and critical thinking skills, affords opportunity to build individual and group discipline, and increases achievement through both individual and collective effort. 

Chorus

Course Length: Full Year 

Grade Levels: 9-12 

This course is open to students interested in vocal music. The students learn a range of choral music in one to four parts and perform at concerts throughout the year. Developing personal talents and working together as a group are emphasized in the course. The goals are to help the student discover the varieties of choral music and to develop their ability to contribute musically in their school and in the community.

 Instrumental Music 

Credits: 5 

Course Length: Full Year 

Grade Levels: 9 -12 

This course is for the student with limited or no prior playing experience on a brass, woodwind, or concert percussion instrument. This course includes the selection of an appropriate instrument for each student to learn to play, proper instrument assembly and playing position, tone production (embouchure), reading basic music notation, and music theory. Instrument choices available to students at this level include flute, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and concert percussion (not drum kit). 

Advanced Instrumental Music 

Credits: 5 

Course Length: Full Year 

Grade Levels: 10 - 12 

Prerequisite: Instrumental Music 

This course allows experienced musicians a chance to challenge themselves to perform a more advanced repertoire and delve deeper into music theory. This higher level of instrumental music allows for more differentiated instruction and greater results for advanced musicians. 

Strings

Course Length: Full Year 

Grade Level: 9 - 12

Full year courses designed to provide students with a continuation of musical skills developed in their primary schools. This course is a developmental performance-based group and students are expected to reach a proficiency level on their instruments conducive to playing level II-III music, and have knowledge of the technical skills applicable to their respective instrument. String Orchestra is an elective, performance class open to all string players who have completed the elementary/middle school string program, or its equivalent outside the system
