Shout out to Joe Cosette for sharing his virtual escape room idea using Google Forms.
I adapted his work as a series of Moodle quizzes where students work in teams to unlock "Doors" to level up using the interactive quiz mode, and also to give realtime feedback and hints to help students re-assess their learning, re-group, and stay focused on learning to escape together as a Team!
Students can not solve the puzzles on their own--for example, Player Four might need a clue from Player Two, who depends on a piece of information from Player One! Each group and player has randomized variables, so questions are similar, but numbers are totally different or drawn from a pool of questions! Also, full color questions, as well as video clips of cars driving and graphs can be shown--since it's a challenge about motion and kinematics afterall!😎
Normally, reviewing for finals and exams is super boring, but this is a fun twist to "level up" and engage your students!
Notice how these 2nd semester seniors ready to check out and graduate in less than a month, are actually dialed in and engaged working on review for the AP Physics exam!
Here 2nd semester seniors ready to check out are actually engaged and actively working together to beat the Motion Madness Escape Room! Notice in this short clip how each team is dialed in and able to use the immediate feedback and adaptive quiz mode in Moodle to not give up when facing a setback, but to use any feedback and hints to continue working together to escape!
A virtual timer is setup using a H5P interactive as a nice backdrop and to give students simple directions to get started!
Below is a sample template to see how the Virtual Escape Room is structured.
Notice how Player Four needs a hint from Player Three in order to "level up", and unlock the next door--and with real time feedback and hints students are encouraged to learn from mistakes, reassess their strategy, and to actively work together to escape together!
