Overview
Definition: Team-Based Learning is an evidence based collaborative learning teaching strategy designed around units of instruction, known as “modules,” that are taught in a three-step cycle: preparation, in-class readiness assurance testing, and application-focused exercise. A class typically includes one module.
Preparation before class
Students must complete preparatory materials before a class or the start of the module. Materials may be text, visual or other, and set at a level that is appropriate to the students and the course.
Active Quiz Plugin Overview:
The Active Quiz plugin was developed by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and Teaching & Research Application Development as way to engage medical students during class in formative assessment, active discussion, and collaboration critical to training our next generation of healthcare practitioners. It was designed based on the principles of Team Based Learning pioneered by Professor Larry Michaelsen’s work at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Business.
Simple way to look at Active Quiz: it’s a classroom response system (a.k.a. “clickers”) / Kahoot! on steroids! It takes more work to set it up the first time, but once you learn the process, it goes very quickly!
Remember, as Spider Man’s Uncle Ben said, “With more power comes greater responsibility!”
Key Features:
- Able to run sessions individually, but more importantly in GROUPS where students must work together & can also self-select groups for flexible teacher deployment!
- Able to give a wide range of questions beyond just multiple choice: fill in the blank, dynamic calculated, drag-n-drop, questions with images, video / audio clips, dynamic matching etc. Every student / group receives the same question, but choice order is scrambled, calculated questions each group receives a dynamic generated set of values (cool!), etc.
- Many instructor options to change the time, point value, and review options for each session to really embrace the “teachable moment”!
