Embedding Google Docs / Slides "cleanly" in Canvas
While helping out some intrepid colleagues in the World Language's department on our Staff Institute Day, one frustrated teacher pointed out that her Google doc with her calendar was not displaying in a very "user friendly" manner inside the Canvas page since a part of the page was getting chopped off and there was too much screen space being wasted with the Google Docs toolbar at the top using the built-in Canvas embed tool.
Below is a simple way we came up with to make a clean "embed" of any Google Doc or Slides into your course that ONLY shows your document without extraneous toolbars and allows you to customize the display of your content!
The take-away here is that while an automated tool makes things easier, you do lose power and control, BUT there usually is a way if you are given enough power and know-how to get the job done!
Since she wanted a better experience for her students and could picture what it should look like, we were able to work together to come up with a simple solution that she was able to share and show her colleagues in the room how to do it on their own courses with lots of ensuing high fives going around!
