Camps and EOTC
Every year there is a senior and middle school camp. Camp is focussed on developing key competencies and extending our students through a range of experiences and challenges to learn about themselves and our New Zealand. Camp plays an important role in preparing each student for high school and for many boarding schools. Camp is organised by the classroom teachers and an effort is made to keep costs to a minimum. Fundraising is used to help minimise costs. Parents are encouraged to support fundraising and in attending camp - we can not run camps without parent support. Parents will be kept up to date during the year by the classroom teacher.
Across the year students participate in numerous education outside the classroom activities and events to foster their academic, cultural, physical and social development. As students progress in age the level of EOTC advances. In Year 7 and 8 EOTC becomes an integral part of fostering the development of our students and providing them with numerous and rich experiences.
LARS (Learning Across Rural Schools)
The Year 7 and 8 students participate in a Mid Canterbury Rural Schools Learning Cluster. The purpose of this cluster is to extend our students through a range of EOTC and learning opportunities providing extension and opportunities to follow a passion or spark a passion, and to provide an opportunity for our senior students to mix with peers across Mid Canterbury in their preparation for secondary education. The LARS cluster meets twice a term and some projects become part of the learning programme within school fostering collaboration and across school learning.
William Pike Challenge
The Year 7 and 8 students participate in the William Pike Challenge Award which is very similar of Duke of Ed programmes at secondary school. Students participate in three elements, outdoor activities, community service and passion project. Students have an opportunity to step outside their comfort zone and develop and strengthen vital universal life skills. You can follow William Pike on facebook https://www.facebook.com/pikechallenge?fref=ts
Swimming
Swimming is an important part of our Health and Physical Education Programme. Your child is expected to take part, please send a note or contact the office if your child is not able to swim due to a cold. We have a small heated swimming pool that the juniors are able to use.
We swim at Hinds in Term 1 and weather permitting in Term 4. We endeavour to have an extensive swimming programme as we live in a country surrounded by water, and as New Zealanders we are active around water.
Hinds School also has the opportunity to attend swimming lessons at the Ashburton Community Pool once a year, and we actively take up this opportunity. Parents are asked to cover a small fee. We are very grateful for this support from our community.
Sports Days
Hinds School is part of the Hinds Group of Schools ( Longbeach, Mayfield and Mt Somers). During the school year combined events are held e.g.: Swimming Sports, Cross Country, Kiwi Sport Day and Athletics Day. It is a great opportunity for our students to meet new students and compete and a great opportunity for us as a school to get together.
If children are unable to participate in any sporting activity they must bring a note from home.
Annual Skiing Trip
Each year the whole school spends a day learning and experiencing skiing and snowboarding at Mt Hutt. It is a fantastic opportunity for our children to immerse themselves in our rich local environment and challenge themselves to learn a new skill. We offer transport to the mountain in buses to all families at a small cost.
Other sporting opportunities:
Here at Hinds School we also participate in other sporting events around Mid Canterbury and encourage the children to participate. Some events include; Winter Tournament, Rippa Rugby, Jump Jam competition, Triathlon and family tennis competition.
